The insect spermatheca: an overview.

The chorionic structure of sixteen pentatomid species is described. Morphological patterns in different taxonomic levels are discussed. In addition, egg characters useful in cladistic analyses are listed, and some of those characters are tested for congruence with two cladistic analyses previously conducted within Pentatomidae. Descriptive studies were conducted with Banasa induta, Capivaccius bufo, Catulona pensa, Chinavia armigera, Chinavia aseada, Chinavia brasicola, Chinavia runaspis, Dichelops furcatus, Euschistus heros, Euschistus riograndensis, Euschistus paranticus, Mormidea cornicollis, Podisus distinctus, Podisus nigrispinus, Serdia apicicornis, and Thoreyella maracaja. The eggs were examined and photographed under light and scanning electron microscopy. Based on literature data, a list of 40 egg characters with potential phylogenetic importance has been compiled. Some of these characters were included in the cladistic analyses of the genus Nezara (six characters) and of the Chinavia obstinata group (five characters). Both analyses were performed in TNT with equal weighting of characters. The eggs of most of the Neotropical species studied were barrel-shaped, chorion translucent and spinose, with aero-micropylar processes that were short and clubbed. The patterns of egg morphology could be identified in Carpocorini, Procleticini, and in the genera Banasa, Chinavia, Euschistus, Mormidea, and Podisus. In the cladistic analyses, the inclusion of egg characters did not affect the topology of the trees shown in the original papers. For the analyses, the egg characters were somewhat informative. At present, a total of 286 Pentatomidae species have their egg stage described.

External egg structure of the Pentatomidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) and the search for characters with phylogenetic importance.

The female internal reproductive anatomy of two mantophasmatodean species, Karoophasma biedouwense and Viridiphasma clanwilliamense, is described in detail using X-ray micro-computed tomography, light microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. We identified paired ovaries containing panoistic ovarioles, a spermatheca surrounded by an epithelium of glandular structure, together with a spermathecal duct surrounded by muscle cells. Tubular accessory glands, which are present in many insects, are missing throughout the female genital tract of heelwalkers. Therefore, we suggest that the gland cells included in the epithelium of the ventral genital chamber of heelwalkers produce the secretions used for building egg pods in which eggs and sand are glued together. The two species investigated differ in the number of ovarioles per ovary and in the shape of their spermatheca. This investigation adds to the scarce information on mantophasmatodean internal genitalia and provides a basis for further research on reproductive behavior in heelwalkers.

The morphology and histology of the male reproductive system in Dolycoris baccarum Linnaeus 1758 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)--light and scanning electron micoscope studies.

The male reproductive system of Eurydema ventrale Kolenati 1846 is studied morphologically and histologically by using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopes. The reproductive system of the male E.ventrale consists of a pair of testis, a pair of vas deferens, a pair of seminal vesicles, accessory glands, a bulbus ejaculatorius, a pair of ectodermal sacs, and a ductus ejaculatorius. The testicular follicles have three different development zones (growth zone, maturation zone, and differentiation zone). The testes are connected to the seminal vesicles by the vas deferens that is a specialized in sperm storage. Sperm have an elongated head and a tail (flagellum) with an axonema and two mitochondrial derivatives. Vas deferens and seminal vesicles are fine, long, and cylindrical. The seminal vesicle is connected with bulbus ejaculatorius, which is balloon shaped and surrounded with accessory glands. The bulbus ejaculatorius is continuous with ductus ejaculatorius which is connected to the aedeagus.

The male reproductive system of Graphosoma lineatum (Linnaeus 1758) is studied morphologically and histologically using both light and scanning electron microscopes (SEM). On the basis of histological sections and whole morfological studies, the following elements in the structure of the male reproductive system of G. lineatum have been examined: the structure of a pair of testis containing the testes follicles and the stage of spermatogenesis, the connection of testes and vas deferens; the position and the histological structure the of a pair of vas deferens which is the tube down which the sperm travels, the structure of seminal vesicle which is where the sperm is stored prior to mating which supply seminal fluid for additional volume and to nourish the sperm before-during their journey, the bulbus ejaculatorius, a pair of ectodermal sacs the ductus ejaculatorius as well as the structure of aedeagus.

Morphology and Histology of the Male Reproductive System in Graphosoma lineatum (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) Based on Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy

The spermathecae of four species of Eurydema (E. fieberi Schummel 1837, E. oleraceum (Linnaeus 1758), E. ornatum (Linnaeus, 1758), and E. spectabilis Horvath, 1882) were compared using both light and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. All the spermathecae which are examined species are contains spermathecal bulb (reservoir), a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges, proximal and distal spermathecal ducts, dilation of spermathecal duct and a genital chamber with two ring sclerites. Spermathecal bulb shape is changed from oval or oblong (E. fieberi) semi –oblong (E. oleraceum, E. ornatum) ,and semi-spherical (E. spectabilis). Distal and proximal flanges of four species of Eurydema have strongly sclerotized and median spermathecal dilations a resemble balloons and sclerotized rods are present. Generally, in all species proximal spermathecal duct is long with muscular surface.

Spermathecae morphology in Four Species of Eurydema Laporte, 1833 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) from Turkey: A Scanning Electron Microscope Study

The female reproductive morphology and histology of Graphosoma lineatum (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy. We found that the female had a pair of ovaries, each with 7 meroistic telotrophic ovarioles, a pair of lateral oviducts, a common oviduct, a spermatheca, accessory glands and a genital chamber. Each ovariole is composed of four main regions: (1) the thread-like terminal filament (2) the tropharium, a chamber housing anteriorly the nurse cells and posteriorly the young oocytes, (3) a long vitellarium composed of a series of oocytes, which become progressively large towards the posterior and, and (4) the pedicel (ovariolar stalk) in which the mature eggs are lodged before passing into the lateral oviduct.
