We propose a compact conformal wearable antenna that operates in the 2.36-2.4 GHz medical body-area network band. The antenna is enabled by placing a highly truncated metasurface, consisting of only a two by two array of I-shaped elements, underneath a planar monopole. In contrast to previously reported artificial magnetic conducting ground plane backed antenna designs, here the metasurface acts not only as a ground plane for isolation, but also as the main radiator. An antenna prototype was fabricated and tested, showing a strong agreement between simulation and measurement. Further numerical and experimental investigations reveal that the performance of the antenna is extraordinarily robust to both structural deformation and human body loading, far superior to both planar monopoles and microstrip patch antennas. Additionally, the introduced metal backed metasurface enables a 95.3% reduction in the specific absorption rate, making such an antenna a prime candidate for incorporation into various wearable devices.

Wearable health-monitoring systems are becoming very popular, especially in enabling the noninvasive diagnosis of vital functions of the human body. Besides typical singular heartbeat or perspiration sensors, which have been commercially available in recent years, the deployment of a series of body-worn sensors can enable an effective health-monitoring mechanism. The combined information obtained from such systems can either be relayed directly to any health-monitoring personnel in the case of emergencies or can be logged and analyzed as a part of preventive health measures. However, the deployment of on-body nodes for humans must be performed with care, as they may interfere with the patients' regular movements. This is especially challenging because the relationship between the electromagnetic waves is influenced by the patient's movements, distance from the nearest base station, operating environment, etc. Additional challenges to the deployment of such mechanisms are also faced in situations where the nodes require additional on-body space, impose additional weight, or are not conformal enough to the patient's body. On the hardware design aspect, the sensory and communication functions on the electronic node have to be designed using special materials to avoid reliability issues or damage due to repeated or intense movements. Finally, and perhaps the most important aspect that needs to be addressed concerning such systems, is their electromagnetic safety level, which is defined by their specific absorption rates (SARs). This article aims to review the latest developments in body-worn wireless health-monitoring systems and their current challenges and limitations and to discuss future trends for such worn devices for these applications.

Wearable Wireless Health Monitoring: Current Developments, Challenges, and Future Trends

A novel wearable dual-band textile antenna, designed for optimal on-body performance in the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical bands, is proposed. By using brass eye-lets and a combination of conducting and non-conductive textile materials, a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide cavity with ground plane is realized that is very compact and flexible, while still directing radiation away from the wearer. Additional miniaturization is achieved by adding a row of shorting vias and slots. Beside excellent free space performance in the 2.4 and 5.8 GHz bands, respectively, with measured impedance bandwidth of 4.9% and 5.1%, maximal measured free-space gain of 4.1 and 5.8 dBi, and efficiency of 72.8% and 85.6%, very stable on-body performance is obtained, with minimal frequency detuning when deploying the antenna on the human body and when bent around cylinders with radii of 75 and 40 mm. At 2.45 and 5.8 GHz, respectively, the measured on-body gain is 4.4 and 5.7 dBi, with sufficiently small calculated SAR values of 0.55 and 0.90 W/kg. These properties make the proposed antenna excellently suited for wearable on-body systems.

Compact Half Diamond Dual-Band Textile HMSIW On-Body Antenna

A new broadband textile based PIFA antenna structure designed for wireless body area network (WBAN) applications is presented. The new topology can be directly integrated into clothing. The study starts by considering three different materials: flexible copper foil, and ShieldIt Super and pure copper polyester taffeta conductive textiles. Bandwidth broadening is successfully achieved by implementing a novel and simple slot in the radiating patch. The measured reflection coefficient and radiation characteristics agree well with simulations. Moreover, radiation characteristics and bandwidth show satisfactory immunity against detuning when operating on-body, especially when placed on the back. To our knowledge, the proposed structure is the first fully fabric based slotted PIFA to be reported in open literature with high bandwidth (more than 46%) and reasonable gain (ca. 1.5 dB), to be used for multiple applications in the frequency band of 1.8 to 3.0 GHz.

Design of a Broadband All-Textile Slotted PIFA

Utilization of wearable textiles in the antenna segment has been seen on the rise due to the recent miniaturization of wireless devices. A wearable antenna is meant to be a part of the clothing used for communication purposes, which includes tracking and navigation, mobile computing and public safety. This literature review intend to disclose this unconventional antenna technology and provides readers with the background of the wearable antenna that would include about specification of the antenna, material for the antenna and analysis that must be done to design proper wearable antennas. All the designs presented are of the recent development in wearable technology.

A review of wearable antenna

A novel, dual-band wearable textile antenna fabricated using conductive textiles for operation in both ISM and HiperLAN applications is presented. Its concept is based on the suspended-plate antenna. It features a 60 $\,\times\,$ 45 mm $^2$ rectangular radiating element suspended over a 80 $\,\times\,$ 60 mm $^{2}$ ground plane using a 5-mm foam substrate. The proposed rectangular radiator is modified using slots, slits, and shorting posts to enable dual-band resonance and broad bandwidths in both frequency bands: 277 MHz (2.22–2.48 GHz) in the ISM and 850 MHz (4.95–5.80 GHz) in the HiperLAN band. The antenna radiates unidirectionally, and the ground plane avoids coupling to the users' body. The SP-WTA shows a total efficiency between 67% and 89% and a peak gain of 8.33 dB.

Dual-Band Suspended-Plate Wearable Textile Antenna

Bandwidth characteristic of a wearable antenna is one of the major factors in determining its usability on the human body. In this work, a planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) structure is proposed to achieve a large bandwidth to avoid serious antenna reflection coefficient detuning when placed in proximity of the body. The proposed structure is designed based on a simple structure, in order to provide practicality in application and maintain fabrication simplicity. Two different types of conductive textiles, namely Pure Copper Polyester Taffeta Fabric (PCPTF) and ShieldIt, are used in order to proof its concept, in comparison with a metallic antenna made from copper foil. The design is spaced and fabricated using a 6 mm thick fleece fabric. To cater for potential fabrication and material measurement inaccuracies, both antennas' performance are also investigated and analyzed with varying physical and material parameters. From this investigation, it is found that the proposed structure's extended bandwidth enabled the antenna to function with satisfactory onbody reflection coefficients, despite unavoidable gain and efficiency reduction.
