TL;DR: Most Nigerian diabetics have suboptimal glycemic control, are hypertensives, and have chronic complications of DM, and improved quality of care and treatment to target is recommended to reduce diabetes-related morbidity and mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Genome-Wide Search for Type 2 Diabetes Susceptibility Genes in West Africans The Africa America Diabetes Mellitus (AADM) Study
Charles N. Rotimi,Guanjie Chen,Adebowale Adeyemo,Adebowale Adeyemo,Paulette Furbert-Harris,Debra Guass,Jie Zhou,Kate Berg,Olufemi Adegoke,Albert G.B. Dunston,Francis S. Collins +26 more
TL;DR: A genome-wide linkage analysis of type 2 diabetes in a cohort of 343 affected sibling pairs in West Africa, where diabetes is less common than in the U.S, found suggestive evidence of linkage in four regions on three chromosomes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence, associated factors and relationship between prehypertension and hypertension: a study of two ethnic African populations in Northern Nigeria.
TL;DR: It was concluded that less than 20% of people of Hausa and Fulani ethnicities had optimum blood pressure suggesting that rise in blood pressure begins early in this population, and the fifth decade of life may represent a period of transition from prehypertension to hypertension.
Journal ArticleDOI
An assessment of the disease burden of foot ulcers in patients with diabetes mellitus attending a teaching hospital in Lagos, Nigeria.
TL;DR: This study attempted to determine the disease burden of this important DM complication in Nigerians with DM by determining the direct economic costs of diabetes mellitus foot syndrome (DMFS), which ranged from NGN 20 400.00 to NGN 278 029.60.
Journal ArticleDOI
In Search of Susceptibility Genes for Type 2 Diabetes in West Africa: The Design and Results of the First Phase of the AADM Study

Bonney,Francis S. Collins +22 more
TL;DR: The Africa America Diabetes Mellitus study will create a comprehensive epidemiologic and genetic resource that will facilitate a powerful genome-wide search for West African susceptibility genes to type 2 diabetes.
