Systems approaches to innovation in crop protection. A systematic literature review

Unclean cooking fuel is widely used in the developing world, and it is the main indication of energy poverty in rural China. In this paper, we investigate the situation, transition, and determination of fuel choice in China's rural household cooking. Using the large scale micro-survey data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we find that there is a big gap in using commercial cooking fuels between rural and urban households: 60% of the rural households adopt traditional biomass resource as their main fuel for cooking in 2011, while this figure is less than 5% in the urban. We also identify a significant spatial divide in fuel choice: in southeastern coastal areas, about 40% of the rural households prefer solid fuels, while this figure jumps to over 80% in northeastern areas. The longitudinal data also reveal a significant transition from traditional to modern fuels from 2008 to 2012. Moreover, the distance to the most commonly used farmer's market, education background, coal price and female labor participation are all influential in determining the households' choices.

Cooking fuel choice in rural China: results from microdata

Energy inputs and greenhouse gases emissions in wheat production in Gorgan, Iran

The aim of this study was to determine energy consumption of input and output used in pomegranate production in Antalya, Turkey. The data for the production of pomegranate were collected from 85 pomegranate farms by using a face-to-face questionnaire method in 2007 production period. In the study, energy values were calculated by multiplying the amount of inputs and outputs by the related energy conversion factors. The results indicated that total energy inputs were 53,764.63 MJ ha -1 . About 40% of this was generated by chemical fertilizers and 37% from chemicals. About 84% of the total energy inputs used was indirect and 89% of the total energy inputs used non-renewable energy in pomegranate production. The net energy and energy productivity values were estimated to be 2275.37 MJ ha -1 and 0.43 respectively, and the ratio of energy outputs to energy inputs was 1.04.

Analysis of energy use for pomegranate production in Turkey.

This study was conducted to search for crop producers’ sources of soil operation, seed selection and seeding techniques, fertilizers and fertilizing, pest management, irrigation, input selection and product marketing information. Socioeconomic characteristics and information- seeking behavior influencing farmers’ decisions to select their information sources was also the purpose of the study. Data were collected from a sample of 169 crop producers in Gaziantep province of Turkey. Results showed that crop producers use more information coming from traditional sources as compared to modern information sources. Contacts with extension service, educational level, use of printed materials and Internet had influence on their use of modern information sources for the practices covered in this study.

Describes the general model and current status of the Turkish agricultural information system and the roles of research and extension agencies. Concludes that, while Turkey has many agricultural and related organisations that have made considerable contributions to agricultural development within the country, there is no effective communication between the research and extension institutions. This has inhibited the generation and dissemination of new technologies to farmers. The private sector is not likely to be a major substitute for public sector research and extension for several decades. Makes recommendations for the improvement of the system.
