Life cycle of the heterotrophic dinoflagellate pfiesteria piscicida (dinophyceae)1
R. Wayne Litaker,Mark W. Vandersea,Steven R. Kibler,Victoria J. Madden,Edward J. Noga,Patricia A. Tester +5 more
TL;DR: A rigorous examination of the life cycle of P. piscicida using nuclear staining techniques combined with high‐resolution video microscopy, EM, and in situ hybridization with a suite of fluorescently labeled peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probes showed that it had a typical haplontic dinoflagellate life cycle.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of light intensity on cylindrospermopsin production in the cyanobacterial HAB species Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii
TL;DR: Results indicate that the highest intracellular toxin concentrations in the field are likely to occur in C. raciborskii populations that have been actively growing at light intensities of 75–150μmol photons m−2 s−1 for more than two weeks, and that peak soluble toxin levels will be found at the end of a bloom.
Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonal niche strategy of the bloom-forming dinoflagellate Heterocapsa triquetra
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the environmental factors associated with three separate wintertime Heterocapsa triquetra blooms in the shallow tidally mixed Newport River estuary, North Carolina, USA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Climate change and harmful benthic microalgae.
TL;DR: How complex environmental interactions can influence abundance and potential range extensions of BHAB species in different biogeographic regions are hypothesized and sentinel sites appropriate for long-term monitoring programs to detect range extensions and reduce human health risks are identified.
Journal Article
Winter distribution of sea turtles in the vicinity of Cape Hatteras and their interactions with the summer flounder trawl fishery
TL;DR: Aerial surveys of Nosh Carolina offshore waters between Cape Lookout and the North Carolina/Virginia state line were conducted to determine the abundance of sea turtles in the area where a trawl fishery for summer flounder was active, and to relate the distribution of turtles to physical oceanographic processes.
