With the decline in oil discoveries during the last decades it is believed that EOR technologies will play a key role to meet the energy demand in years to come. This paper presents a comprehensive review of EOR status and opportunities to increase final recovery factors in reservoirs ranging from extra heavy oil to gas condensate. Specifically, the paper discusses EOR status and opportunities organized by reservoir lithology (sandstone and carbonates formations and turbiditic reservoirs to a lesser extent) and offshore and onshore fields. Risk and rewards of EOR methods including growing trends in recent years such as CO2 injection, high pressure air injection (HPAI) and chemical flooding are addressed including a brief overview of CO2-EOR project economics.

Particle detachment from the rock during suspension transport in porous media was widely observed in laboratory corefloods and for flows in natural reservoirs. A new mathematical model for detachment of particles is based on mechanical equilibrium of a particle positioned on the internal cake or matrix surface in the pore space. The torque balance of drag, electrostatic, lifting and gravity forces, acting on the particle from the matrix and the moving fluid, is considered. The torque balance determines maximum retention concentration during the particle capture. The particle torque equilibrium is determined by the dimensionless ratio between the drag and normal forces acting on the particle. The maximum retention function of the dimensionless ratio (dislodging number) closes system of governing equations for colloid transport with particle release. One-dimensional problem of coreflooding by suspension accounting for limited particle retention, controlled by the torque sum, allows for exact solution under the assumptions of constant filtration coefficient and porosity. The explicit formulae permit the calculation of the model parameters (maximum retention concentration, filtration and formation damage coefficients) from the history of the pressure drop across the core during suspension injection. The values for maximum retention concentration, as obtained from two coreflood tests, have been matched with those calculated by the torque balance on the micro scale.

Modified Particle Detachment Model for Colloidal Transport in Porous Media

A novel mechanism of residual oil reduction during low-salinity water flooding by induced fines migration and consequent permeability damage is discovered. Dry corefloods (without oil) with piecewise-constant decreasing salinity are conducted to verify the presence of movable fines that yield permeability decrease. Sequential two-phase coreflood tests are performed using the displacement of nonpolar oil by high-salinity water, followed by full resaturation of the core by nonpolar oil and low-salinity waterflooding. The test then continued in tertiary mode, in which brines of decreasing salinity were injected in the presence of residual oil. Four Berea cores with high clay content, one Bentheimer core with low clay content, and two artificial cores with no clay content were used for two-phase waterflooding experiments. Effects of Fines Migration on Residual Oil during Low-Salinity Waterflooding

This article describes a semi-analytical model for two-phase immiscible flow in porous media. The model incorporates the effect of capillary pressure gradient on fluid displacement. It also includes a correction to the capillarity-free Buckley–Leverett saturation profile for the stabilized-zone around the displacement front and the end-effects near the core outlet. The model is valid for both drainage and imbibition oil–water displacements in porous media with different wettability conditions. A stepwise procedure is presented to derive relative permeabilities from coreflood displacements using the proposed semi-analytical model. The procedure can be utilized for both before and after breakthrough data and hence is capable to generate a continuous relative permeability curve unlike other analytical/semi-analytical approaches. The model predictions are compared with numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The comparison shows that the model predictions for drainage process agree well with the numerical simulations for different capillary numbers, whereas there is mismatch between the relative permeability derived using the Johnson–Bossler–Naumann (JBN) method and the simulations. The coreflood experiments carried out on a Berea sandstone core suggest that the proposed model works better than the JBN method for a drainage process in strongly wet rocks. Buildup and stabilization of external filter cake is a well-known phenomenon in several environmental and industrial applications. Significant decline of the tangential rate along thick intervals in lengthy vertical wells yields a nonuniform external filter cake profile. We derive the mechanical equilibrium equations for the stabilized cake profile accounting for electrostatic particle–rock interaction, varying permeate factor, applying the torque balance to describe cake equilibrium, and calculating the lever arm ratio using Hertz’s theory for contact deformation of cake and particles. An implicit formula for the cake thickness along the well is derived. Two regimes of the stabilized cake buildup correspond to low rates, where the cake starts from the reservoir top, and for high rates, where the cake is formed in the lower well section only.
