Photocatalytic water splitting represents a promising strategy for clean, low-cost, and environmental-friendly production of H2 by utilizing solar energy. There are three crucial steps for the photocatalytic water splitting reaction: solar light harvesting, charge separation and transportation, and the catalytic H2 and O2 evolution reactions. While significant achievement has been made in optimizing the first two steps in the photocatalytic process, much less efforts have been put into improving the efficiency of the third step, which demands the utilization of cocatalysts. To date, cocatalysts based on rare and expensive noble metals are still required for achieving reasonable activity in most semiconductor-based photocatalytic systems, which seriously restricts their large-scale application. Therefore, seeking cheap, earth-abundant and high-performance cocatalysts is indispensable to achieve cost-effective and highly efficient photocatalytic water splitting. This review for the first time summarizes all the developed earth-abundant cocatalysts for photocatalytic H2- and O2-production half reactions as well as overall water splitting. The roles and functional mechanism of the cocatalysts are discussed in detail. Finally, this review is concluded with a summary, and remarks on some challenges and perspectives in this emerging area of research.

Earth-abundant cocatalysts for semiconductor-based photocatalytic water splitting

There is a growing interest in the conversion of water and solar energy into clean and renewable H2 fuels using earth-abundant materials due to the depletion of fossil fuel and its serious environmental impact. This critical review highlights some key factors influencing the efficiency of heterogeneous semiconductors for solar water splitting (i.e. improved charge separation and transfer, promoted optical absorption, optimized band gap position, lowered cost and toxicity, and enhanced stability and water splitting kinetics). Moreover, different engineering strategies, such as band structure engineering, micro/nano engineering, bionic engineering, co-catalyst engineering, surface/interface engineering of heterogeneous semiconductors are summarized and discussed thoroughly. The synergistic effects of the different engineering strategies, especially for the combination of co-catalyst loading and other strategies seem to be more promising for the development of highly efficient photocatalysts. A thorough understanding of electron and hole transfer thermodynamics and kinetics at the fundamental level is also important for elucidating the key efficiency-limiting step and designing highly efficient solar-to-fuel conversion systems. In this review, we provide not only a summary of the recent progress in the different engineering strategies of heterogeneous semiconductors for solar water splitting, but also some potential opportunities for designing and optimizing solar cells, photocatalysts for the reduction of CO2 and pollutant degradation, and electrocatalysts for water splitting.

Engineering heterogeneous semiconductors for solar water splitting

In recent years, heterogeneous photocatalysis has received much research interest because of its powerful potential applications in tackling many important energy and environmental challenges at a global level in an economically sustainable manner. Due to their unique optical, electrical, and physicochemical properties, various 2D graphene nanosheets-supported semiconductor composite photocatalysts have been widely constructed and applied in different photocatalytic fields. In this review, fundamental mechanisms of heterogeneous photocatalysis, including thermodynamic and kinetics requirements, are first systematically summarized. Then, the photocatalysis-related properties of graphene and its derivatives, and design rules and synthesis methods of graphene-based composites are highlighted. Importantly, different design strategies, including doping and sensitization of semiconductors by graphene, improving electrical conductivity of graphene, increasing eloectrocatalytic active sites on graphene, strengthening interface coupling between semiconductors and graphene, fabricating micro/nano architectures, constructing multi-junction nanocomposites, enhancing photostability of semiconductors, and utilizing the synergistic effect of various modification strategies, are thoroughly summarized. The important applications including photocatalytic pollutant degradation, H2 production, and CO2 reduction are also addressed. Through reviewing the significant advances on this topic, it may provide new opportunities for designing highly efficient 2D graphene-based photocatalysts for various applications in photocatalysis and other fields, such as solar cells, thermal catalysis, separation, and purification.

Graphene in Photocatalysis: A Review

Hydrogen production from solar water splitting has been considered as an ultimate solution to the energy and environmental issues. Over the past few years, graphene has made great contribution to improving the light-driven hydrogen generation performance. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the recent research progress on graphene-based materials for hydrogen evolution from light-driven water splitting. It begins with a brief introduction of the current status and basic principles of hydrogen generation from solar water splitting, and tailoring properties of graphene for application in this area. Then, the roles of graphene in hydrogen generation reaction, including an electron acceptor and transporter, a cocatalyst, a photocatalyst, and a photosensitizer, are elaborated respectively. After that, the comparison between graphene and other carbon materials in solar water splitting is made. Last, this review is concluded with remarks on some challenges and perspectives in this emerging field.

Graphene-Based Materials for Hydrogen Generation from Light-Driven Water Splitting†

Photocatalytic hydrogen (H2) production from water splitting under visible-light irradiation is considered to be an attractive way to solve the increasing global energy crises in modern life. In this study, highly efficient photocatalytic H2 production without the assistant of a cocatalyst was achieved using Zn11–xCdxS solid solutions as the visible-light-driven photocatalysts and a mixed Na2S and Na2SO3 aqueous solution as the sacrificial reagent. The Zn1–xCdxS samples were prepared by a simple zinc–cadmium–thiourea (Zn–Cd–Tu) complex thermolysis method using thiourea, zinc acetate (Zn(Ac)2), and cadmium acetate (Cd(Ac)2) as the precursors. The obtained Zn1–xCdxS solid solutions feature a small crystallite size and precisely controllable band structure, which are beneficial for the photocatalysis. When the Zn/Cd molar ratio is 1:1, the prepared Zn0.5Cd0.5S sample exhibits the highest H2-production rate of 7.42 mmol·h–1·g–1, exceeding that of the pure CdS and ZnS samples by more than 24 and 54 times, resp...
