Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is one of the most widely used statistical procedures in psychological research It is a classic technique, but statistical research into EFA is still quite active, and various new developments and methods have been presented in recent years The authors of the most popular statistical packages, however, do not seem very interested in incorporating these new advances We present the program FACTOR, which was designed as a general, user-friendly program for computing EFA It implements traditional procedures and indices and incorporates the benefits of some more recent developments Two of the traditional procedures implemented are polychoric correlations and parallel analysis, the latter of which is considered to be one of the best methods for determining the number of factors or components to be retained Good examples of the most recent developments implemented in our program are (1) minimum rank factor analysis, which is the only factor method that allows one to compute the proportion of variance explained by each factor, and (2) the simplimax rotation method, which has proved to be the most powerful rotation method available Of these methods, only polychoric correlations are available in some commercial programs A copy of the software, a demo, and a short manual can be obtained free of charge from the first author

FACTOR: A computer program to fit the exploratory factor analysis model

The present text explains the main aspects of factor analysis as a tool in psychological research. First, the basic issues are revised at a conceptual level, so that the review is appropriate for beginners as well as for those who want an in deep knowledge of the technique. Next, the differences between exploratory and confirmatory analysis as well as the procedures for fitting the model and transforming the initial solution are discussed in detail. These issues are discussed according to the recommended steps in a factor-analytic research: from the design and data collection to the interpretation of the final solution. Finally, the functioning of the “Factor” program is explained. Factor is more complete than most commercial programs, and is also freely distributed. Additionally, a solved exercise is proposed as a practice to apply the material discussed in the text.

FACTOR 9.2: A Comprehensive Program for Fitting Exploratory and Semiconfirmatory Factor Analysis and IRT Models

This article proposes a comprehensive approach for assessing the quality and appropriateness of exploratory factor analysis solutions intended for item calibration and individual scoring. Three groups of properties are assessed: (a) strength and replicability of the factorial solution, (b) determinacy and accuracy of the individual score estimates, and (c) closeness to unidimensionality in the case of multidimensional solutions. Within each group, indices are considered for two types of factor-analytic models: the linear model for continuous responses and the categorical-variable-methodology model that treats the item scores as ordered-categorical. All the indices proposed have been implemented in a noncommercial and widely known program for exploratory factor analysis. The usefulness of the proposal is illustrated with a real data example in the personality domain.

Assessing the Quality and Appropriateness of Factor Solutions and Factor Score Estimates in Exploratory Item Factor Analysis.

Psychometric properties of the "Lif Orientation Test" (LOT): An empirical application of the Multidie mensional Graded Response Model. This study examines the psychometric properties of the LOT-R Spanish adaptation using the m ultidimensional graded response model (MGRM). The study has two purposes: substantive and methodological. From a substantive point of view we want to assess the behaviour of a test which, in its original version, has interesting properties in applied personality measurement. From a methodological point of view our study illustrates the application of the MGRM in the personality domain, and allows us to assess whether the theoretical advantag es of the MGRM are important from an applied point of view. The substantive results suggest that the properties of the Spanish adaptation are similar to those of the original test. The methodological results show that the model has some advantages with respect to traditional analyses. Both type of results are discussed from an applied point of view.
