Abstract: The views expressed in this volume are those held by the authors and are not necessarily those of the Officers and Fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. No part of this pamphlet may be reproduced or utilized in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying and recording, or by any information storage retrieval system, without permission in writing from the publisher. The Association of American University Presses' Resolution on Permissions constitutes the only exception to this prohibition. The authors would like to express their deep gratitude to the members of the Advisory Committee, who met with us many times and commented on numerous drafts of this text.
