Designing 3D constructs with appropriate materials and structural frameworks for complex dental restorative/regenerative procedures has always remained a multi-criteria optimization challenge. In this regard, 3D printing has long been known to be a potent tool for various tissue regenerative applications, however, the preparation of biocompatible, biodegradable, and stable inks is yet to be explored and revolutionized for overall performance improvisation. The review reports the currently employed manufacturing processes for the development of engineered self-supporting, easily processable, and cost-effective 3D constructs with target-specific tuneable mechanics, bioactivity, and degradability aspects in the oral cavity for their potential use in numerous dental applications ranging from soft pulp tissues to hard alveolar bone tissues. A hybrid synergistic approach, comprising of development of multi-layered, structurally stable, composite building blocks with desired physicomechanical performance and bioactivity presents an optimal solution to circumvent the major limitations and develop new-age advanced dental restorations and implants. Further, the review summarizes some manufacturing perspectives which may inspire the readers to design appropriate structures for clinical trials so as to pave the way for their routine applications in dentistry in the near future.

PurposeThis research aims to propose a framework to integrate Green Lean Six Sigma (GLSS) and Industry 4.0 to improve organizational sustainability.Design/methodology/approachThe integration of GLSS and Industry 4.0 is proposed based on theoretical facets of the individual approaches. A generic, conceptual framework of an integrated GLSS-Industry 4.0 approach is then proposed using the application of different tools and techniques of GLSS and Industry 4.0 at different stages of the realization of a project.FindingsBoth approaches have common facets related to enablers and barriers, and the integrated application of tools and techniques of each approach supplements the common focus of both related to sustainability enhancement. The proposed, conceptual framework provides systematic guidelines from the project selection stage to the sustainment of the solution, with the enumerated application of different techniques and tools at each step of the framework.Originality/valueThis research is the first of its kind to propose the integration of GLSS and Industry 4.0 under the umbrella of a unified approach, including a conceptual framework of this integrated GLSS-Industry 4.0 approach.

Current advancements in polymer/polymer matrix composites for dental implants: A systematic review

Functionally graded materials (FGMs) have been an integral part of the bio-medical industry for a significant span of period. It has helped to address issues arising due to use of orthodox materials in the fabrication of implants and other surgical tools. With variations in the material concentration of a single material or combination of multiple materials affects its properties (mechanical, physical and chemical). This has been motivated by the enhancement in controlled deposition techniques and the ability to build structures with complex lattice formations. Additive Manufacturing (AM) has proven its proficiency in producing products with complex geometry and user-derived designs. FGMs and AM can be coupled together to fabricate parts with preferred set of functioning to improve bio-mechanical characteristics of implants, thus providing thrust to the scope of research in this field. This article focuses on the state-of-the-art study of functionally graded materials, overview of the currently available manufacturing techniques and methodologies that are being used to manufacture various artificial implants namely dental, cardiovascular, knee and hip implants. Along with this it also sheds light on the challenges that are limiting the success outcomes with probable ways to overcome them.
