Natural antioxidants are widely distributed in food and medicinal plants. These natural antioxidants, especially polyphenols and carotenoids, exhibit a wide range of biological effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-atherosclerosis and anticancer. The effective extraction and proper assessment of antioxidants from food and medicinal plants are crucial to explore the potential antioxidant sources and promote the application in functional foods, pharmaceuticals and food additives. The present paper provides comprehensive information on the green extraction technologies of natural antioxidants, assessment of antioxidant activity at chemical and cellular based levels and their main resources from food and medicinal plants.

Natural Antioxidants in Foods and Medicinal Plants: Extraction, Assessment and Resources

Background Wine production represents one of the major agricultural activities worldwide. This production is accompanied with the generation of tremendous amounts of wastes and by-products exceptionally rich in bioactive compounds (especially phenolics). Recovering these molecules constitutes a key point for the valorization of the wine-processed materials, making them on the verge of commercialization. Regarding the health related benefits of these molecules; they could be used as additives for food and cosmetic products. Scope and approach The current review is revising the potential of alternative extraction methodologies for the recovery of antioxidant bioactive compounds from winery wastes and by-products. Conventional (solid liquid extraction, heating, grinding, etc) and non-conventional (pulsed electric fields, high voltage electrical discharges, pulsed ohmic heating, ultrasounds, microwave-assisted extractions, sub- and supercritical fluid extractions, as well as pressurized liquid extraction) methods have been applied for the extraction of high-added value compounds from winery-processed materials. Key findings and conclusions Non-conventional technologies represent a promising tool to recover high-added value compounds from winery wastes and by-products. However, several parameters are influencing the choice of technology used to recover these compounds, such as the matrix being processed, the selectivity, the energy consumption, the equipment cost, and the value of the extract.

Green alternative methods for the extraction of antioxidant bioactive compounds from winery wastes and by-products: A review

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major health problems in the world, the incidence and associated mortality are increasing. Inadequate regulation of the blood sugar imposes serious consequences for health. Conventional antidiabetic drugs are effective, however, also with unavoidable side effects. On the other hand, medicinal plants may act as an alternative source of antidiabetic agents. Examples of medicinal plants with antidiabetic potential are described, with focuses on preclinical and clinical studies. The beneficial potential of each plant matrix is given by the combined and concerted action of their profile of biologically active compounds.

An update on natural compounds in the remedy of diabetes mellitus: A systematic review.

An Overview of Microwave Assisted Extraction and its Applications in Herbal Drug Research

Objective: To evaluate the immunomodulatory activity of the aerial roots of Ficus benghalensis (Family Moraceae). Materials and Methods: Various extracts of the aerial roots of Ficus benghalensis were evaluated for potential immunomodulatory activity, using the in vitro polymorphonuclear leucocyte (human neutrophils) function test. The methanol extract was evaluated for immunomodulatory activity in in vivo studies, using rats as the animal model. The extracts were tested for hypersensitivity and hemagglutination reactions, using sheep red blood cells (SRBC) as the antigen. Distilled water served as a control in all the tests. Results: The successive methanol and water extracts exhibited a significant increase in the percentage phagocytosis versus the control. In the in vivo studies, the successive methanol extract was found to exhibit a dose related increase in the hypersensitivity reaction, to the SRBC antigen, at concentrations of 100 and 200 mg/kg. It also resulted in a significant increase in the antibody titer value, to SRBC, at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg in animal studies. Conclusion: The successive methanol extract was found to stimulate cell mediated and antibody mediated immune responses in rats. It also enhanced the phagocytic function of the human neutrophils, in vitro.

Antidiabetic activity of extracts of Anacardium occidentale Linn. leaves on n-streptozotocin diabetic rats

The development of effective and safe anti-diabetic agent is still a major challenge for modern scientific research. Traditionally fruit juice of Momordica charantia has been used for treatment of diabetes for centuries. Charantin, a natural steroidal glycoside present in the fruits of this medicinal plant, has been reported to possess potential hypoglycemic activity. However, this phytoconstituent has not been explored yet clinically to treat diabetes. This review summarizes the chemistry, biological activity and reported analytical methods for charantin, a bioactive compound present in M. charantia.
