Starting from our earlier model [J. Chem. Phys. 66, 1496 (1977)] a simple expression is derived for the radial dependent damping functions for the individual dispersion coefficients C2n for arbitrary even orders 2n. The damping functions are only a function of the Born–Mayer range parameter b and thus can be applied to all systems for which this is known or can be estimated. For H(1S)–H(1S) the results are in almost perfect agreement with the very accurate recent ab initio damping functions of Koide, Meath, and Allnatt. Comparisons with less accurate previous calculations for other systems also show a satisfactory agreement. By adding a Born–Mayer repulsive term [A exp(−bR)] to the damped dispersion potential, a simple universal expression is obtained for the well region of the atom–atom van der Waals potential with only five essential parameters A, b, C6, C8, and C10. An improved simple model for the van der Waals potential based on universal damping functions for the dispersion coefficients

After an outline of work on rare-gas systems, which serves as a target for parallel work on alkali halides, and an initial brief survey of those parts of this parallel work for which results have been obtained, interionic potential models for alkali halides are considered in some detail. The rigid ion potentials of Fumi and Tosi are discussed and then a major part of the section is devoted to deriving a new set of polarizable ion potentials, which incorporate the ideas behind the lattice dynamical shell model. Extensions which include many-body terms in the potentials are considered briefly and finally the information which can be obtained from alkali halide diatomic molecules is discussed. In the third section methods of computer simulation for ionic liquids are outlined, concentrating on the molecular dynamics method, and some of the properties which can be obtained by analysing the ion trajectories are listed. Results from simulations, including some new work on LiF, NaCl and RbI, are reviewed.

Interionic potentials in alkali halides and their use in simulations of the molten salts

Intermolecular forces in simple systems

Using a transformation of the rigid body equations of motion due to Evans [4], a new algorithm is presented for the molecular dynamics simulation of rigid polyatomic molecules. The algorithm consists of solving the eulerian rigid body equations, using quaternions to represent orientations, by a fifth-order predictor corrector method. Compared to previous methods, it is shown that this algorithm leads to an order of magnitude increase in computing speed.

Singularity free algorithm for molecular dynamics simulation of rigid polyatomics

A potential function for ArKr is derived which is able to reproduce the best data available for the differential and the integral cross section, the second virial coefficient and the diffusion and viscosity within the quoted experimental errors.

An accurate intermolecular potential for argon

Thermodynamic properties of liquid argon are calculated by Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics techniques, using accurate pair-potential functions determined from the properties of solid and gaseous argon, together with the Axilrod-Teller three-body interaction. Satisfactory techniques for evaluating three-body contributions to thermodynamic properties without excessive requirements of computer time are described. Quantum corrections are included. Agreement with experiment is excellent: the best pair and triplet potentials give an excellent description of the properties of solid, gaseous and liquid argon.

Liquid argon: Monte carlo and molecular dynamics calculations

Thermodynamic properties and elastic constants of solid argon have been calculated using an accurate pair-potential together with the Monte Carlo method and the Axilrod-Teller three-body potential. Excellent agreement is obtained with experimental values of the pressure and internal energy. However the calculated elastic constants show systematic deviations from the experimental values. These discrepancies are examined in some detail and possible reasons for them are given.
