We review the space-mapping (SM) technique and the SM-based surrogate (modeling) concept and their applications in engineering design optimization. For the first time, we present a mathematical motivation and place SM into the context of classical optimization. The aim of SM is to achieve a satisfactory solution with a minimal number of computationally expensive "fine" model evaluations. SM procedures iteratively update and optimize surrogates based on a fast physically based "coarse" model. Proposed approaches to SM-based optimization include the original algorithm, the Broyden-based aggressive SM algorithm, various trust-region approaches, neural SM, and implicit SM. Parameter extraction is an essential SM subproblem. It is used to align the surrogate (enhanced coarse model) with the fine model. Different approaches to enhance uniqueness are suggested, including the recent gradient parameter-extraction approach. Novel physical illustrations are presented, including the cheese-cutting and wedge-cutting problems. Significant practical applications are reviewed.

Space mapping: the state of the art

Nanotechnology is the science of understanding matter and the control of matter at dimensions of 100 nm or less. Encompassing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology, nanotechnology involves imaging, measuring, modeling, and manipulation of matter at this level of precision. An important aspect of research in nanotechnology involves precision control and manipulation of devices and materials at a nanoscale, i.e., nanopositioning. Nanopositioners are precision mechatronic systems designed to move objects over a small range with a resolution down to a fraction of an atomic diameter. The desired attributes of a nanopositioner are extremely high resolution, accuracy, stability, and fast response. The key to successful nanopositioning is accurate position sensing and feedback control of the motion. This paper presents an overview of nanopositioning technologies and devices emphasizing the key role of advanced control techniques in improving precision, accuracy, and speed of operation of these systems.

A Survey of Control Issues in Nanopositioning

The present invention relates to the field of energy harvesting. More particularly, embodiments of the invention relate to methods, systems, and devices for scavenging vibration- based energy from an ambient vibration source. Specific embodiments of the present invention include an energy harvesting device comprising: a) an elongated ferromagnetic cantilevered beam having a base and an opposing end; b) a plurality of piezoceramic elements operably connected to the base of the beam; c) a first support member for supporting the beam at its base; and d) two permanent magnets disposed on a second support member; wherein the base end of the beam is operably connected to the support member such that the beam is suspended lengthwise from the support member at its base and the opposing end of the beam is free and is disposed a selected distance above and between the magnets; and wherein the piezoceramic elements are operably connected in parallel to each other, such that during operation the beam is capable of scavenging vibrational energy from an external excitation source and the piezoceramic elements are capable of converting the harmonic or random vibrational energy into electrical energy. The piezo-magneto-elastic generator results in a 200% increase in the open- circuit voltage amplitude (hence promising an 800% increase in the power amplitude). The inventive piezo-magneto-elastic generator can be applied for use in piezoelectric energy harvesting, as well as in electromagnetic, electrostatic and magnetostrictive energy harvesting techniques and their hybrid combinations with similar devices.

Microwave Filters for Communication Systems: Fundamentals, Design and Applications

We present a new architecture for wideband vibration-based micro-power generators (MPGs). It replaces a linear oscillator with a piecewise-linear oscillator as the energy harvesting element of the MPG. A prototype of an electromagnetic MPG designed accordingly is analyzed analytically, numerically and experimentally. We find that the new architecture increases the bandwidth of the MPG during a frequency up-sweep, while maintaining the same bandwidth in a down-sweep. Closed-form expressions for the response of the new MPG as well as the up-sweep bandwidth are presented and validated experimentally. Simulations show that under random-frequency excitations, the new MPG collects more energy than the traditional MPG.

A wideband vibration-based energy harvester

Electrothermal actuators have a very promising future in MEMS applications since they can generate large deflection and force with low actuating voltages and small device areas. In this study, a lumped model of a two-hot-arm horizontal thermal actuator is presented. In order to prove the accuracy of the lumped model, finite element analysis (FEA) and experimental results are provided. The two-hot-arm thermal actuator has been fabricated using the MUMPs process. Both the experimental and FEA results are in good agreement with the results of lumped modeling.

Modeling of two-hot-arm horizontal thermal actuator

A three dimensional waveguide is integrated with a MEMS structure to control a signal in various RF components. The components include switches, variable capacitors, filters and phase shifters. A controller controls movement of the MEMS structure to control a signal within the component. A method of construction and a method of operation of the component are described. The switches have high power handling capability and can be operated at high frequencies. By integrating a three dimensional waveguide with a MEMS structure, the components can be small in size with good operating characteristics.

MEMS based RF components and a method of construction thereof

This paper provides an overview of the microwave applications of high-temperature superconductor (HTS) technology. The main characteristics of HTS materials are outlined, highlighting the differences between superconductors and normal conductors. This paper presents recent progress in the development of HTS filters, multiplexers, cryogenic receivers, delay lines, and antennas. A brief summary of cryocooler technology and cryopackaging requirements is presented. The benefits of using HTS technology in wireless and satellite systems are also discussed. The intent of this paper is to provide perspective to newcomers in the field and to empower the potential end-users with current status and performance capabilities of HTS microwave devices.
