Some cases of Alzheimer's disease are inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Genetic linkage studies have mapped a locus (AD3) associated with susceptibility to a very aggressive form of Alzheimer's disease to chromosome 14q24.3. We have defined a minimal cosegregating region containing the AD3 gene, and isolated at least 19 different transcripts encoded within this region. One of these transcripts (S182) corresponds to a novel gene whose product is predicted to contain multiple transmembrane domains and resembles an integral membrane protein. Five different missense mutations have been found that cosegregate with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease. Because these changes occurred in conserved domains of this gene, and are not present in normal controls, they are likely to be causative of AD3.

Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis: A Survey

This paper examines the role of fiscal policy, trade and energy taxes on environmental quality in Europe using disaggregated data at the monitoring station level for the 12 richest European countries spanning the period from 1995 to 2008. Our estimations show that fiscal policies and energy taxes are important determinants of pollution through various mechanisms. We find that increasing the share of fiscal spending in GDP and shifting the emphasis towards spending in public goods and against non-social subsidies significantly lower the concentrations of sulfur dioxide and ozone but not nitrogen dioxide. At the same time, energy taxes reduce nitrogen dioxide concentrations but have no effect on ozone and sulfur dioxide. Finally trade openness has a direct effect on sulfur dioxide but no effect on nitrogen dioxide or ozone. Our estimates account for time-varying unobserved heterogeneity.

The Policy Roots of Socioeconomic Stagnation and Environmental Implosion: Latin America 1950–2000

The global conditions during a moderate geomagnetic disturbance event on May 15, 1996, are examined by comparing data from several ground-based instruments and inner tail satellites with global MHD simulations of the same event. The ground-based data show two substorm intensifications about 40 min apart, the first one being small and localized (a pseudobreakup) and the second leading to a major rearrangement of both the ionospheric auroral distribution and the magnetotail configuration. The simulation shows that during the pseudobreakup, open field lines were reconnecting in the midtail, but the flows were mainly tailward and very few effects were observable in the inner magnetosphere. The result that pseudobreakups can be associated with activity producing topological changes in the tail is an important new aspect that has not been discussed in earlier studies. Both the observations and the simulation show two distinct regions of activity: a thin current sheet in the inner tail magnetically connected with the auroral bulge and a reconnection region in the midtail associated with the most intense electrojet currents.

Pseudobreakup and substorm onset: Observations and MHD simulations compared

Retirement and succession considerations of family farm operators in Maryland are considered in this paper. Retirement decisions are found to be mainly determined by personal considerations, and only secondary importance is given to succession considerations. However, the relative importance of succession considerations is positively related to the importance of the farm enterprise relative to other income-generating activities of the family. The conclusion is that retirement and succession decisions in family farms are not separable.
