Some cases of Alzheimer's disease are inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Genetic linkage studies have mapped a locus (AD3) associated with susceptibility to a very aggressive form of Alzheimer's disease to chromosome 14q24.3. We have defined a minimal cosegregating region containing the AD3 gene, and isolated at least 19 different transcripts encoded within this region. One of these transcripts (S182) corresponds to a novel gene whose product is predicted to contain multiple transmembrane domains and resembles an integral membrane protein. Five different missense mutations have been found that cosegregate with early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease. Because these changes occurred in conserved domains of this gene, and are not present in normal controls, they are likely to be causative of AD3.

. We examine the distribution and propagation of energy in the plasma sheet and lobes using observations and simulations for three substorms. The substorms occurred on 9 March 1995, 10 December 1996, and 27 August 2001 and have been simulated using the Lyon-Fedder-Mobarry magneto-hydrodynamic code. All three events occur over North America and show a clear substorm current wedge over the ground magnetometer chains of Alaska, Canada, and Greenland. The three simulations show the thinning of the plasma sheet during the growth phase of the event and an increase in the relative amount of thermal energy due to the compression of the plasma sheet. Generally, the total lobe energy, polar cap flux, and lobe magnetic field strength simultaneously increase during the growth phase, and polar cap flux and total lobe energy only start dropping at substorm onset, as measured by the CANOPUS magnetometer chain. Starting at time of onset and continuing throughout the expansion phase a transfer of magnetic energy from the lobes into the plasma sheet occurs, with the increase in the plasma sheet energy ranging from 30–40% of the energy that is released from the lobes.

We show that the tax system in Chile is insufficient, inefficient and inequitable. Insufficient because it does not yield enough revenues for the state to promote human capital development and to face poverty in a more comprehensive way; inefficient because it is highly unbalanced causing most of the tax burden to be concentrated in very few taxes while neglecting the use of the least distortion-prone tax mechanisms available; inequitable because it forces the middle and low income groups to shoulder most of the tax burden while allowing the super rich to get away paying one of the lowest tax rates among middle income and advanced countries.

En este trabajo se propone un mecanismo concreto para captar una parte significativa de las rentas economicas de la gran mineria privada del cobre en Chile (GMP-10), estimadas en USD 120 mil millones, por Sturla, Accorsi, Lopez y Figueroa (2016) para el periodo 2005-2014. Este mecanismo corresponde a una nueva tasa impositiva de largo plazo sobre las utilidades del sector, que asegura que ninguna empresa deje de percibir por lo menos el retorno normal al capital, incluyendo primas de riesgo de diferente indole. Se demuestra que las empresas que explotan estos yacimientos, en caso de ser sometidas a esta nueva tasa impositiva, seguiran invirtiendo y produciendo tal como lo han hecho hasta ahora. Este nuevo impuesto a la gran mineria no seria aplicable en el corto plazo debido a la invariabilidad tributaria autoimpuesta por gobiernos anteriores. Sin embargo, se propone un metodo de extraccion de rentas que no vulnera esta invariabilidad y que tiene efectos recaudatorios de corto plazo similares a los esperados por la tasa impositiva propuesta para el largo plazo.
