Quantification of humic acids in surface water: effects of divalent cations, pH, and filtration.
TL;DR: Two methods to assess humic acids (HAs) in surface water namely absorbance of ultraviolet light at 254 nm (UV(254)) and total organic carbon (TOC) are compared as well as to evaluate the effects of calcium and magnesium concentrations, pH and sample filtration on the methods' results.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phosphorus fractionation in volcanic lake sediments (Azores - Portugal).
TL;DR: The phosphorus distribution in volcanic sediments of three lakes that are under different anthropogenic pressures in São Miguel island was evaluated using a sequential extraction scheme and the results show that in lakes with higher trophic status (Lake Furnas and Lake Sete Cidades), the NaOH extracted P is the dominant fraction, that contribute with more than 50% to total sedimentary phosphorus.
Journal ArticleDOI
Competition between nitrospira spp. and nitrobacter spp. in nitrite-oxidizing bioreactors
Regina Nogueira,Luís F. Melo +1 more
TL;DR: The hypothesis that Nitrobacter is a superior competitor when resources are abundant, while Nitrospira thrive under conditions of resource scarcity is supported.
Journal ArticleDOI
In situ microbial fuel cell-based biosensor for organic carbon
L. Peixoto,Booki Min,Gilberto Martins,António G. Brito,P. Kroff,Pier Parpot,Irini Angelidaki,Regina Nogueira +7 more
TL;DR: A BOD biosensor based on the microbial fuel cell principle was tested for online and in situ monitoring of biodegradable organic content of domestic wastewater and provides useful information for the development of a biosensor for real-time in situ Monitoring of wastewater quality.
Book ChapterDOI
Brewery and winery wastewater treatment : some focal points of design and operation
António G. Brito,João Peixoto,José M. Oliveira,José Alves de Oliveira,Cristina Amaro da Costa,Regina Nogueira,A. C. Rodrigues +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present some key points on design and operation in wastewater treatment of brewery and winery industries, including an introduction of the industrial processes and then wastewater characteristics and treatment processes.
