Journal ArticleDOI
Correlates of injection drug use among female sex workers in two Mexico-U.S. border cities.
Steffanie A. Strathdee,Morgan M. Philbin,Shirley J. Semple,Minya Pu,Prisci Orozovich,Gustavo J. Martinez,Remedios Lozada,Miguel Fraga,Adela de la Torre,Hugo Staines,Carlos Magis-Rodriguez,Thomas L. Patterson,Thomas L. Patterson +12 more
TL;DR: FSW-IDUs had higher STI levels, engaged in riskier behaviors and were more vulnerable to having unsafe sex with clients compared to other FSWs, indicating that this subgroup is an important bridge population requiring focused prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and Correlates of HIV Infection among Female Sex Workers in 2 Mexico—US Border Cities
Thomas L. Patterson,Thomas L. Patterson,Shirley J. Semple,Hugo Staines,Remedios Lozada,Prisci Orozovich,Jesus Bucardo,Morgan M. Philbin,Pu Minya,Fraga Miguel,Hortensia Amaro,Adela de la Torre,Gustavo J. Martinez,Carlos Magis-Rodriguez,Steffanie A. Strathdee +14 more
TL;DR: Culturally appropriate interventions are needed to identify and treat ulcerative sexually transmitted infections and reduce HIV risks associated with stimulants among FSWs in the Mexico-US border region.
Journal ArticleDOI
Social and structural factors associated with HIV infection among female sex workers who inject drugs in the Mexico-US border region.
Steffanie A. Strathdee,Remedios Lozada,German Martinez,Alicia Vera,Melanie L. A. Rusch,Lucie Nguyen,Robin A. Pollini,Felipe Uribe-Salas,Leo Beletsky,Thomas L. Patterson +9 more

Journal ArticleDOI
Individual, social, and environmental influences associated with HIV infection among injection drug users in Tijuana, Mexico
Steffanie A. Strathdee,Remedios Lozada,Robin A. Pollini,Kimberly C. Brouwer,Andrea Mantsios,Daniela Abramovitz,Tim Rhodes,Carl A. Latkin,Oralia Loza,Jorge Alvelais,Carlos Magis-Rodriguez,Thomas L. Patterson,Thomas L. Patterson +12 more
TL;DR: Individual, social, and environmental factors were independently associated with HIV infection among IDUs in Tijuana, Mexico, suggesting the need to intervene not solely on individual risk behaviors but on social processes that drive these behaviors, including problematic policing practices.
Journal ArticleDOI
Respondent-Driven Sampling of Injection Drug Users in Two U.S.–Mexico Border Cities: Recruitment Dynamics and Impact on Estimates of HIV and Syphilis Prevalence
Simon D. W. Frost,Kimberly C. Brouwer,Michelle Firestone Cruz,Rebeca Ramos,Maria Elena Ramos,Remedios Lozada,Carlos Magis-Rodriguez,Steffanie A. Strathdee +7 more
TL;DR: RDS was an effective method to rapidly recruit IDUs in these cities, and although the frequency of HIV was low, syphilis prevalence was high, particularly in Tijuana, suggesting that further validation of RDS is necessary.
