Current status of the algae production industry in Europe: an emerging sector of the Blue Bioeconomy
Rita Araújo,Fatima Vázquez Calderón,Javier Sanchez Lopez,Isabel C. Azevedo,Annette Bruhn,Silvia Fluch,Manuel García Tasende,Fatemeh Ghaderiardakani,Tanel Ilmjärv,Martial Laurans,Michéal Mac Monagail,Silvio Mangini,César Peteiro,Céline Rebours,Tryggvi S. Stefansson,Jörg Ullmann +15 more
TL;DR: The results of a comprehensive mapping and detailed characterisation of the algae production at the European scale, encompassing macroalgae, microalgae and the cyanobacteria Spirulina, were presented and analyzed in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sustainable harvesting of wild seaweed resources.
TL;DR: As the popularity of seaweeds increases and the use of less traditional species with novel applications comes to the fore, it is critically important to make certain that the sustainability of the resource is ensured given the increased pressures of harvesting.
Journal ArticleDOI
Checklist of benthic marine algae and cyanobacteria of northern Portugal
Rita Araújo,Ignacio Bárbara,Marta Tibaldo,Estibaliz Berecibar,Pilar Díaz Tapia,Rui Pereira,Rui Santos,Isabel Sousa Pinto +7 more
TL;DR: An updated checklist of the benthic marine algae of the northern Portuguese coast is provided, based on new records, literature references, and herbarium data, and distribution shifts of northern cold water species with southern distribution limit in the north of Portugal were not consistent among species.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive expert consultation was conducted in order to assess the status, trends and the most important drivers of change in the abundance and geographical distribution of kelp forests in European waters.
Journal ArticleDOI
REVIEW: Potential effects of kelp species on local fisheries
TL;DR: The consistency of most studies in showing a positive kelp–fishery relationship supports the protection of kelp habitats stated by current environmental directives, but achieving their goals requires that the limitations are addressed through better connections between research, management practice and policy.
