The genus Laminaria sensu lato : recent insights and developments
Inka Bartsch,Christian Wiencke,Kai Bischof,Cornelia Buchholz,Bela H. Buck,Anja Eggert,Peter Feuerpfeil,Dieter Hanelt,Sabine Jacobsen,Rolf Karez,Ulf Karsten,Markus Molis,Michael Y. Roleda,Hendrik Schubert,Rhena Schumann,Klaus Valentin,Florian Weinberger,Jutta Wiese +17 more
TL;DR: This review about the genus Laminaria sensu lato summarizes the extensive literature that has been published since the overview of the genus given by Kain in 1979, and covers recent insights into phylogeny and taxonomy, and discusses morphotypes, ecotypes, population genetics and demography.
Journal ArticleDOI
Microplastic concentrations in beach sediments along the German Baltic coast
TL;DR: Water surface tension is shown to be sufficient to explain floatation of grains with sizes less than 1.5mm, and city discharges, industrial production sites, fishing activity and tourism are the most likely sources for the highest microplastic concentrations.
Journal ArticleDOI
An overview of ecological status, vulnerability and future perspectives of European large shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems, lagoons and transitional waters
Alice Newton,John Icely,Sónia Cristina,Ana C. Brito,Ana Cristina Cardoso,Franciscus Colijn,Simona Dalla Riva,Flemming Gertz,Jens Würgler Hansen,Marianne Holmer,Kateryna Ivanova,Erkki Leppäkoski,Donata Melaku Canu,Chiara Mocenni,Stephen M. Mudge,Nicholas Murray,Morten Pejrup,Arturas Razinkovas,Sofia Reizopoulou,Angel Pérez-Ruzafa,Gerard Schernewski,Hendrik Schubert,Laishalla Carr,Cosimo Solidoro,PierluigiViaroli,J.M. Zaldívar +25 more
TL;DR: In this article, an overview of some of the large, shallow, semi-enclosed coastal systems (SECS) in Europe is given, which are important both from the ecological and the economic perspective (socio-ecological systems) and provide many valuable ecosystem goods and services.

Journal ArticleDOI
Seasonality of Coastal Phytoplankton in the Baltic Sea: Influence of Salinity and Eutrophication
Zita Rasuolė Gasiūnaitė,Ana Carolina Cardoso,Anna-Stiina Heiskanen,Peter Henriksen,Pirkko Kauppila,Irina Olenina,Renata Pilkaitytė,Ingrida Purina,A. Razinkovas,Sigrid Sagert,Hendrik Schubert,Norbert Wasmund +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors define seasonal succession patterns of phytoplankton in seven different areas of the Baltic sea, characterised by different salinity, climate, and trophic conditions and delineate a set of PHYTOPLankton community indicators that are independent of season and salinity.
