Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. A frequent problem in computational modeling is the interconversion of chemical structures between different formats. While standard interchange formats exist (for example, Chemical Markup Language) and de facto standards have arisen (for example, SMILES format), the need to interconvert formats is a continuing problem due to the multitude of different application areas for chemistry data, differences in the data stored by different formats (0D versus 3D, for example), and competition between software along with a lack of vendor-neutral formats. We discuss, for the first time, Open Babel, an open-source chemical toolbox that speaks the many languages of chemical data. Open Babel version 2.3 interconverts over 110 formats. The need to represent such a wide variety of chemical and molecular data requires a library that implements a wide range of cheminformatics algorithms, from partial charge assignment and aromaticity detection, to bond order perception and canonicalization. We detail the implementation of Open Babel, describe key advances in the 2.3 release, and outline a variety of uses both in terms of software products and scientific research, including applications far beyond simple format interconversion. Open Babel presents a solution to the proliferation of multiple chemical file formats. In addition, it provides a variety of useful utilities from conformer searching and 2D depiction, to filtering, batch conversion, and substructure and similarity searching. For developers, it can be used as a programming library to handle chemical data in areas such as organic chemistry, drug design, materials science, and computational chemistry. Open Babel: An open chemical toolbox

Abstract. The 18.6-year lunar nodal cycle arises from variations in the
angle of the Moon's orbital plane. Previous work has linked the nodal cycle
to climate but has been limited by either the length of observations
analysed or geographical regions considered in model simulations of the
pre-industrial period. Here we examine the global effect of the lunar nodal
cycle in multi-centennial climate model simulations of the pre-industrial
period. We find cyclic signals in global and regional surface air
temperature (with amplitudes of around 0.1 K) and in ocean heat uptake and
ocean heat content. The timing of anomalies of global surface air
temperature and heat uptake is consistent with the so-called slowdown in
global warming in the first decade of the 21st century. The lunar nodal
cycle causes variations in mean sea level pressure exceeding 0.5 hPa in the
Nordic Seas region, thus affecting the North Atlantic Oscillation during
boreal winter. Our results suggest that the contribution of the lunar nodal
cycle to global temperature should be negative in the mid-2020s before
becoming positive again in the early 2030s, reducing the uncertainty in time
at which projected global temperature reaches 1.5 ∘C above pre-industrial
levels.

Allergies, both food and environmentally related, are a continually growing health problem, particularly in the Western World. Exact causes and the additional environmental and social factors which play a role in the onset of these illnesses are still poorly understood. What is already clear is that while allergy sufferers remain a minority in the community, the reduction of the Quality-of-Life of these individuals and the financial consequences to the community as a whole is of major significance. Allergy is an illness where the sufferer is confronted on a daily basis with his or her lifestsyle limitations. The direct and indirect costs, from medical care, sick leave, loss of earnings, reduced productivity etc, already reach well into billions of euros. A complicating factor is that there are many kinds of allergy, with many different causes and several approaches for treatment. There is therefore no single solution. Much social and scientific research is still needed to generate the additional knowledge which is required to determine a suitable multidisciplinary strategy for the long-term tackling of this problem. Input from a wide range of sources, from social scientists to medics and from agriculturalists to immunologists etc, is essential to assess the situation fully and to assist in determining longterm policy decisions at a national level. This multidisciplinarity calls for broad support from different parts of government, industry and societal bodies to achieve the desired goal of reversing the rise in the number of allergy sufferers, preferably through prevention rather than cure.

In the normal individual all peripheral pulses demonstrate a respiratory effect with systolic blood pressure falling 3 to 10 mm Hg in normal inspiration. 1 As this pressure change is too small to be appreciated by clinical palpation, the discovery of an exaggerated respiratory effect, the paradoxical pulse, is always an important clinical observation. Such a finding immediately raises the question of restrictive cardiac or obstructive airway disease, conditions which exaggerate the normal and do not cause a "paradoxical" respiratory effect on pulse amplitude. 2 However, when only the pulses of the upper extremity are involved, a regional rather than a central abnormality must be considered.
