Weyl and Dirac semimetals are three-dimensional phases of matter with gapless electronic excitations that are protected by topology and symmetry. As three-dimensional analogs of graphene, they have generated much recent interest. Deep connections exist with particle physics models of relativistic chiral fermions, and, despite their gaplessness, to solid-state topological and Chern insulators. Their characteristic electronic properties lead to protected surface states and novel responses to applied electric and magnetic fields. The theoretical foundations of these phases, their proposed realizations in solid-state systems, and recent experiments on candidate materials as well as their relation to other states of matter are reviewed.

Weyl and Dirac semimetals in three-dimensional solids

The last decade witnessed significant progress in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and its applications. Today, ARPES experiments with 2-meV energy resolution and $0.2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ angular resolution are a reality even for photoemission on solids. These technological advances and the improved sample quality have enabled ARPES to emerge as a leading tool in the investigation of the high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors. This paper reviews the most recent ARPES results on the cuprate superconductors and their insulating parent and sister compounds, with the purpose of providing an updated summary of the extensive literature. The low-energy excitations are discussed with emphasis on some of the most relevant issues, such as the Fermi surface and remnant Fermi surface, the superconducting gap, the pseudogap and $d$-wave-like dispersion, evidence of electronic inhomogeneity and nanoscale phase separation, the emergence of coherent quasiparticles through the superconducting transition, and many-body effects in the one-particle spectral function due to the interaction of the charge with magnetic and/or lattice degrees of freedom. Given the dynamic nature of the field, we chose to focus mainly on reviewing the experimental data, as on the experimental side a general consensus has been reached, whereas interpretations and related theoretical models can vary significantly. The first part of the paper introduces photoemission spectroscopy in the context of strongly interacting systems, along with an update on the state-of-the-art instrumentation. The second part provides an overview of the scientific issues relevant to the investigation of the low-energy electronic structure by ARPES. The rest of the paper is devoted to the experimental results from the cuprates, and the discussion is organized along conceptual lines: normal-state electronic structure, interlayer interaction, superconducting gap, coherent superconducting peak, pseudogap, electron self-energy, and collective modes. Within each topic, ARPES data from the various copper oxides are presented.

Angle-resolved photoemission studies of the cuprate superconductors

First-principles band theory, properly augmented by topological considerations, has provided a remarkably successful framework for predicting new classes of topological materials. This Colloquium discusses the underpinnings of the topological band theory and its materials applications.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a wide band gap semiconductor with potential applications in optoelectronics, transparent electronics, and spintronics. The high efficiency of UV emission in this material could be harnessed in solid-state white lighting devices. The problem of defects, in particular, acceptor dopants, remains a key challenge. In this review, defects in ZnO are discussed, with an emphasis on the physical properties of point defects in bulk crystals. As grown, ZnO is usually n-type, a property that was historically ascribed to native defects. However, experiments and theory have shown that O vacancies are deep donors, while Zn interstitials are too mobile to be stable at room temperature. Group-III (B, Al, Ga, and In) and H impurities account for most of the n-type conductivity in ZnO samples. Interstitial H donors have been observed with IR spectroscopy, while substitutional H donors have been predicted from first-principles calculations but not observed directly. Magnetic anisotropy of Co2+ as signature of intrinsic ferrromagnetism in ZnO:Co

The previously introduced modified melt crystallization process (MMCP) has been applied to prepare single grain YBCO bulk material with Zn partially substituting for Cu. Hole doping was controlled by an appropriate oxidizing treatment of the as-grown bulk. A field induced pinning was indicated by a well pronounced peak of the critical current density jc in the jc vs. H relationship for the maximal oxidized (overdoped) material containing Zn, whereas pure overdoped YBCO shows no peak effect. The peak effect for Zn-doped YBCO appearing for T=77 K at a relatively high field of about 3 T can be attributed to pair breaking by locally induced magnetic moments due to in plane Zn for Cu substitution. Besides high quality of the bulk YBCO, the peak effect is the reason for the trapped field as large as 1.12 T at 77 K in the cylinder of only 25 mm in diameter.

Self-consistent LCAO-CPA method for disordered alloys

We calculate the magnetic interactions between two nearest-neighbor substitutional magnetic ions (Co or Mn) in $\mathrm{ZnO}$ by means of density functional theory and compare it with the available experimental data. Using the local spin density approximation, we find a coexistence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic couplings for $\mathrm{ZnO}:\mathrm{Co}$, in contrast to experiment. For $\mathrm{ZnO}:\mathrm{Mn}$ both couplings are antiferromagnetic, but deviate quantitatively from measurement. That points to the necessity of treating the strong electron correlation at the transition ion site more accurately by applying $\mathrm{LSDA}+U$. We show that we have to distinguish two different nearest-neighbor exchange integrals for the two systems in question that are all antiferromagnetic with values between $\ensuremath{-}0.8$ and $\ensuremath{-}1.8\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{meV}$, in reasonable agreement with experiment.

LSDA + U versus LSDA: Towards a better description of the magnetic nearest-neighbor exchange coupling in Co- and Mn-doped ZnO

The magnetic properties of neutral cation vacancies in II-VI semiconductors are examined using first principles calculations and group theory. A molecular cluster model of a single vacancy in II-VI semiconductors is developed to explain the observed chemical trend. We show that a single Zn vacancy in ZnO yields a total spin ST=1 in agreement with experiments. But for the other less ionic Zn-based II-VI semiconductors ZnA (A=S, Se, Te) this spin triplet state is nearly degenerate with a nonmagnetic spin singlet state.
