Crop diversification and livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Zimbabwe: adaptive management for environmental change

TL;DR: The results are indicative of the importance of crop diversification as a viable climate smart agriculture practice that significantly enhances crop productivity and consequently resilience in rural smallholder farming systems and recommend wider adoption of diversified cropping systems notably those currently less diversified for greater adaptation to the ever-changing climate.
Journal ArticleDOI

Photocatalytic degradation of Bisphenol A (BPA) using immobilized TiO2 and UV illumination in a horizontal circulating bed photocatalytic reactor (HCBPR)

TL;DR: Under the optimum conditions, 95% removal of TOC and 97% removal from BPA can be achieved after 6h of UV radiation, which demonstrates the high photodegradation efficiency of BPA in HCBPR.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitrogen removal performance and microbial community structure dynamics response to carbon nitrogen ratio in a compact suspended carrier biofilm reactor

TL;DR: It is concluded that the compact SCBR was practical to treat municipal wastewater and the shift of microbial community monitored by molecular technologies could offer guidance to the process optimization in engineering.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of carrier concentration on the performance and microbial characteristics of a suspended carrier biofilm reactor

TL;DR: In this paper, a suspended carrier biofilm reactor was investigated for its capability of carbon oxidation and nitrification, where the carrier used was polyvinyl chloride cylinder with 2.5-3.0mm height.
Journal ArticleDOI

Tracking composition and dynamics of nitrification and denitrification microbial community in a biofilm reactor by PCR-DGGE and combining FISH with flow cytometry

TL;DR: Nested analysis of variance assay (ANOVA) demonstrated that the C/N ratio did not significantly affect the shift of populations in different groups of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria detected by FISH-FCM.
