Functionalized graphene with Co-ZIF adsorbed borate ions as an effective flame retardant and smoke suppression agent for epoxy resin.

A biobased flame retardant toughening agent, phosphaphenanthrene groups-containing triscardanyl phosphate (PTCP), was successfully synthesized via debydrochlorination, epoxidation and ring opening reaction from renewable resource cardanol. The chemical structure of PTCP was confirmed by the proton and phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance. Epoxy resins (EPs) with different contents of PTCP were prepared through a simple mixing method. Thermogravimetric analysis results indicated that the earlier degradation of PTCP catalyzed the char formation of epoxy resins that was beneficial to protecting underlying polymers from further decomposition. The flame retardant properties were enhanced with the increase of the PTCP content. The EP composite containing 30 wt % PTCP showed a limiting oxygen index of 30.5%. Renewable Cardanol-Based Phosphate as a Flame Retardant Toughening Agent for Epoxy Resins

A novel additive, tri(phosphaphenanthrene-maleimide-phenoxyl)-triazine (DOPO-TMT), was successfully synthesized. The chemical structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance. DOPO-TMT was blended with epoxy resins to prepare flame-retardant thermosets. The flame-retardant properties were evaluated using limited oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning (UL94), and cone calorimeter tests. The results indicated that DOPO-TMT exhibited excellent flame-retardant effect. The flame-retardant mechanism was studied by thermogravimeric analysis (TGA), pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry (TGA-FTIR) coupled with the morphology and chemical analysis of the char residues. Summary

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of boron compounds on fire protection properties of intumescent coating based on ammonium polyphosphate (APP). Three kinds of boron compounds namely boric acid (BA), zinc borate (ZB) and melamine borate (MB) were used. Total amount of flame retardant additive was kept constant at 30 wt%, and boron compounds were used at three concentrations of 1, 3 and 5 wt%. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and fire test were conducted for the determining the fire performance of intumescent coating. According to fire test results, BA and MB showed synergistic effect at 1 wt% loading. ZB showed antagonistic effect at all concentrations. Fire protection effect of intumescent coating decreased as the added amount of boron compound increased regardless of boron compound type because of suppression of intumescence.
