The MEMS Handbook

Because of the low dimensional power of its force scaling law, surface tension is appropriate for carrying out reshaping and assembly in the microstructure size domain. This paper reviews work on surface tension powered self-assembly of microstructures. The existing theoretical approaches for rotational assembly are unified. The demonstrated fabrication processes are compared. Mechanisms for accurately determining the assembled shape are discussed, and the limits on accuracy and structural distortion are considered. Applications in optics, electronics and mechanics are described. More complex operations (including the combination of self-assembly and self-organization) are also reviewed.

Surface tension-powered self-assembly of microstructures - the state-of-the-art

Micromachining technology opens up many new opportunities for optical and optoelectronic systems It offers unprecedented capabilities in extending the functionality of optical devices and the miniaturization of optical systems Movable structures, microactuators, and microoptical elements can be monolithically integrated on the same substrate using batch processing technologies In this paper, we review the recent advances in this fast-emerging field The basic bulk- and surface-micromachining technologies applicable to optical systems are reviewed The free-space microoptical bench and the concept of optical prealignment are introduced Examples of micromachined optical devices are described, including optical switches with low loss and high contract ratio, low-cost modulators, micromechanical scanners, and the XYZ micropositioners with large travel distance and fine positioning accuracy Monolithically integrated systems such as single-chip optical disk pickup heads and a femtosecond autocorrelator have also been demonstrated

Micromachining for optical and optoelectronic systems

Optical crossconnects with large port counts are fast becoming critical components for high-capacity optical transport networks. The free-space micromachined optical switches (FS-MOS) demonstrated in this letter represent a means of filling this network need by combining the advantages of free-space interconnection with the virtues of integrated optics. Featuring free-rotating hinged micromirrors, the switch overcomes the common drawback of mechanical-type switches, namely long switching time. Measurements have revealed switching times less than 700 /spl mu/s, crosstalk less than -60 dB, extinction ratio greater than 60 dB, negligible polarization-dependent loss, and excellent bit-error-rate (BER) performance.

Free-space micromachined optical switches with submillisecond switching time for large-scale optical crossconnects

Optical systems are ubiquitous in the present-day societal fabric, from sophisticated fiber-optic telecommunication infrastructure to visual information display, down to mundane chores such as bar-code reading at the supermarket. Most of these existing systems are built from bulk optical components, as they have been for many years. Just as miniaturization and batch-process production have revolutionized electronics, similar advances in optics will certain greatly expand its applications and markets. Production techniques for optical systems that employ the emerging micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technologies give promise of achieving this success. Simple micromechanical fabrication techniques are already employed in fiber-optic components to produce what is generally described as silicon-optical-bench systems. New developments, especially those permitting the use of microactuated structures, make substantial increases in system sophistication possible. Surface micromachining, in which microoptical systems are batch-fabricated and placed on top of a silicon wafer, has become a promising approach to this progression. With the demonstration that surface-micromachined elements can be "folded" out from the plane in which they are constructed, an important new degree of design freedom has emerged. This paper examines some of the results obtained and attempts to project possibilities for surface micromachining in future optical systems.

Surface-micromachined microoptical elements and systems

The surface-micromachining technique has been employed to fabricate novel three-dimensional micro-optical elements for free-space integrated optics. The optical axes of these optical elements are parallel to the substrate, which enables the entire free-space optical system to be integrated on a single substrate. Microscale Fresnel lenses, mirrors, beam splitters, gratings, and precision optical mounts have been successfully fabricated and characterized. In addition, micropositioners such as rotary stages and linear translational stages are monolithically integrated with the optical components using the same surface-micromachining process to provide on-chip optical alignment or optomechanical switching. Self-aligned hybrid integration with semiconductor edge-emitting lasers and vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers are also demonstrated for the first time. This new free-space micro-optical bench (FSMOB) technology could significantly reduce the size, weight, and cost of most optical systems, and could have a significant impact on optical switching, optical sensing and optical data-storage systems as well as on the packaging of optoelectronic components.

Micromachined free-space integrated micro-optics

People pursuing careers outside of organizations often find themselves in a career progression paradox: they need to develop expertise to find new work opportunities, but such expertise is largely acquired through accumulating work experience to which they seldom have access. Extant literature proposed that progressive role expansion—starting one’s career specialized in a single work role and later expanding into new work roles—would be helpful to navigate through such a challenge. However, we propose that when women engage in lateral role expansion within professional careers, they face a glass wall, an invisible barrier that limits their work opportunities due to a gendered evaluation of role expansion. Specifically, role expansion by female freelancers is seen as less agentic than by male freelancers, and such difference undermines the perceived competence and commitment of female freelancers. Across three studies using different methods (archival data and experiment), industries (music and film), and samples (Korean and American), we find female freelancers who expand into a new work role are seen as less agentic and have a lower chance of finding new work opportunities than men who expand. Although women who pursue careers outside of organizations may become unshackled from gender biases embedded within traditional organizational hierarchies, we suggest that they still face substantial obstacles in the new forms of work.
