Journal ArticleDOI
Injectable progestin-only contraception is associated with increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the female genital tract
Jennifer Deese,Jennifer Deese,Lindi Masson,Lindi Masson,William C. Miller,Myron S. Cohen,Charles S. Morrison,Meng Wang,Khatija Ahmed,Kawango Agot,Tania Crucitti,Saïd Abdellati,Lut Van Damme +12 more
TL;DR: Genital inflammatory changes may be a mechanism of increased HIV risk among injectable progestin‐only contraception (IPC) users.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammatory cytokine biomarkers of asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections and vaginal dysbiosis: a multicentre validation study.
Lindi Masson,Lindi Masson,Shaun L. Barnabas,Shaun L. Barnabas,Jennifer Deese,Katie Lennard,Smritee Dabee,Hoyam Gamieldien,Shameem Z. Jaumdally,Anna-Lise Williamson,Francesca Little,Lut Van Damme,Khatija Ahmed,Tania Crucitti,Saïd Abdellati,Linda-Gail Bekker,Linda-Gail Bekker,Glenda Gray,Glenda Gray,Janan Dietrich,Heather B. Jaspan,Jo-Ann S. Passmore +21 more
TL;DR: An inexpensive, point-of-care screening test including IL-1α,IL-1β and IP-10 (and potentially pH) could be used in resource-limited settings to identify women with asymptomatic STIs and dysbiosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
A new PCR-ELISA for diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in blood of HIV-negative subjects
Simonne De Doncker,Veronik Hutse,Saïd Abdellati,Suman Rijal,B. M. S. Karki,Saskia Decuypere,D. Jacquet,Dominique Le Ray,Marleen Boelaert,Shekhar Koirala,Jean-Claude Dujardin +10 more
TL;DR: The ability of PCR-ELISA to detect parasites in blood of HIV-negative patients is demonstrated, and the method could be used for epidemiological as well as clinical purposes, as it reduces the need for traumatic bone marrow sampling and risky spleen aspiration.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular typing of the actin gene of Trichomonas vaginalis isolates by PCR–restriction fragment length polymorphism
TL;DR: A reproducible, sensitive and specific typing method is developed that was able to distinguish at least eight T. vaginalis actin genotypes, and further studies are needed to evaluate the method using clinical specimens and to determine the utility of the typing method for the genotypic characterization of T. vaginais.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV and other sexually transmitted infections among female sex workers in Kinshasa Democratic Republic of Congo in 2002.
Judith Vandepitte,Faustin Malele,Dieu-Merci Kivuvu,Samuel Edidi,Jérémie Muwonga,François B. Lepira,Saïd Abdellati,Joelle Kabamba,Catherine Van Overloop,Anne Buvé +9 more
TL;DR: The prevalence of HIV and other STIs seems to have stabilized since the beginning of the project in 1988.
