Journal ArticleDOI
Genital Inflammation and the Risk of HIV Acquisition in Women
Lindi Masson,Lindi Masson,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Lenine J. P. Liebenberg,Lise. Werner,Cheryl Baxter,Kelly B. Arnold,Carolyn Williamson,Carolyn Williamson,Francesca Little,Leila E. Mansoor,Vivek Naranbhai,Douglas A. Lauffenburger,Katharina Ronacher,Gerhard Walzl,Nigel Garrett,Brent L. Williams,Mara Couto-Rodriguez,Mady Hornig,W. Ian Lipkin,Anneke Grobler,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim +25 more
TL;DR: Elevated genital concentrations of HIV target cell-recruiting chemokines and a genital inflammatory profile contributes to the high risk of HIV acquisition in these African women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of artemether-lumefantrine policy and improved vector control on malaria burden in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Karen I. Barnes,David N Durrheim,Francesca Little,Amanda Jackson,Ushma Mehta,Elizabeth Allen,Sicelo S Dlamini,Joyce Tsoka,Barry Bredenkamp,D. Jotham Mthembu,Nicholas J. White,Brian L. Sharp +11 more
TL;DR: Together with concurrent strengthening of vector control measures, the antimalarial treatment policy change to AL contributed to a marked and sustained decrease in malaria cases, admissions, and deaths, by greatly improving clinical and parasitological cure rates and reducing gametocyte carriage.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plasma cytokine levels during acute HIV-1 infection predict HIV disease progression.
Lindi Roberts,Jo-Ann S. Passmore,Carolyn Williamson,Francesca Little,Lisa M. Bebell,Koleka Mlisana,Wendy A. Burgers,Francois van Loggerenberg,Gerhard Walzl,Joel Fleury Djoba Siawaya,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim +11 more
TL;DR: A small panel of plasma cytokines during acute HIV-1 infection was predictive of long-term HIV disease prognosis in this group of South African women.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neurobehavioral and neurodevelopmental effects of pesticide exposures.
Leslie London,Cheryl L. Beseler,Maryse F. Bouchard,David C. Bellinger,Claudio Colosio,Philippe Grandjean,Philippe Grandjean,Raúl Harari,Tahira Kootbodien,Hans Kromhout,Francesca Little,Tim Meijster,Angelo Moretto,Diane S. Rohlman,Lorann Stallones +14 more
TL;DR: The symposium discussion highlighted many challenges for researchers concerned with the prevention of neurotoxic illness due to pesticides and generated a number of directions for further research and policy interventions for the protection of human health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Defining genital tract cytokine signatures of sexually transmitted infections and bacterial vaginosis in women at high risk of HIV infection: a cross-sectional study
Lindi Masson,Koleka Mlisana,Francesca Little,Lise. Werner,Nonhlanhla N. Mkhize,Katharina Ronacher,Hoyam Gamieldien,Carolyn Williamson,Lyle R. McKinnon,Gerhard Walzl,Quarraisha Abdool Karim,Salim S. Abdool Karim,Jo-Ann S. Passmore +12 more
TL;DR: Although certain STIs, in particular chlamydia and gonorrhoea, were associated with high genital cytokine concentrations, only 19% of women with an STI/BV had clinical signs, as certain infections were found to be highly inflammatory.
