Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of HIV-1 and increasing immunosuppression on malaria parasitaemia and clinical episodes in adults in rural Uganda: a cohort study
James A. G. Whitworth,Dilys Morgan,Maria A Quigley,Adrian Smith,Billy N. Mayanja,Henry Eotu,Nicholas Omoding,Martin Okongo,Samuel S. Malamba,A. Ojwiya +9 more
TL;DR: HIV-1 infection is associated with an increased frequency of clinical malaria and parasitaemia, and this association tends to become more pronounced with advancing immunosuppression, and could have important public-health implications for sub-Saharan Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of co-trimoxazole prophylaxis on morbidity mortality CD4-cell count and viral load in HIV infection in rural Uganda.
Jonathan Mermin,John R. Lule,John Paul Ekwaru,Samuel S. Malamba,Robert Downing,Ray L. Ransom,Frank Kaharuza,David H. Culver,Francis Kizito,Rebecca Bunnell,Aminah Kigozi,Damalie Nakanjako,Winnie Wafula,Robert Quick +13 more
TL;DR: Daily co-trimoxazole prophylaxis was associated with reduced morbidity and mortality and had beneficial effects on CD4-cell count and viral load and is a readily available, effective intervention for people with HIV infection in Africa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Assessment of a pilot antiretroviral drug therapy programme in Uganda: patients' response, survival, and drug resistance
Paul J. Weidle,Samuel S. Malamba,Raymond Mwebaze,Catherine Sozi,Gideon Rukundo,Robert Downing,Debra L. Hanson,Dorothy Ochola,P. Mugyenyi,Jonathan Mermin,Badara Samb,Eve M. Lackritz +11 more
TL;DR: Identification and treatment of patients earlier in the course of their illness and increased use of HAART could improve probability of survival and decrease drug resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Disclosure of HIV status and adherence to daily drug regimens among HIV-infected children in Uganda.
Winnie Bikaako-Kajura,Emmanuel Luyirika,David W. Purcell,Julia Downing,Frank Kaharuza,Jonathan Mermin,Samuel S. Malamba,Rebecca Bunnell +7 more
TL;DR: The findings underscore the need for providers to support caregivers to disclose, provide on-going support and maintain open communication with HIV-infected children taking cotrimoxazole prophylaxis and ART to ensure adherence to life-extending medications.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rates of HIV-1 transmission within marriage in rural Uganda in relation to the HIV sero-status of the partners.
Lucy M. Carpenter,Anatoli Kamali,Anthony Ruberantwari,Samuel S. Malamba,James A. G. Whitworth +4 more
TL;DR: Men are twice as likely as women to bring HIV infection into a marriage, presumably through extra-marital sexual behaviour, within sero-discordant marriages women become infected twice as fast as men, probably because of increased biological susceptibility.
