The Chromosomal Toxin Gene yafQ Is a Determinant of Multidrug Tolerance for Escherichia coli Growing in a Biofilm
Joe J. Harrison,William D. Wade,Sarah Akierman,Caterina Vacchi-Suzzi,Carol A. Stremick,Raymond J. Turner,Howard Ceri +6 more
TL;DR: Results suggest that yafQ mediates the tolerance of E. coli biofilms to multiple but specific antibiotics; moreover, this data imply that this cellular pathway for persistence is likely different from that of multidrug-tolerant cells in stationary-phase planktonic cell cultures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Giardia duodenalis induces pathogenic dysbiosis of human intestinal microbiota biofilms.
Jennifer K. Beatty,Sarah Akierman,Jean-Paul Motta,Stacy S. R. Muise,Matthew L. Workentine,Joe J. Harrison,Amol Bhargava,Paul L. Beck,Kevin P. Rioux,Gordon Webb McKnight,John L. Wallace,Andre G. Buret +11 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that polymicrobial interactions involving Giardia and gut microbiota may cause persistent dysbiosis, offering a new interpretation of the reasons why those afflicted with giardiasis are predisposed to gastrointestinal disorders post-infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Invasive Amoebiasis: A Review of Entamoeba Infections Highlighted with Case Reports
Christopher D Skappak,Sarah Akierman,Sara Belga,Kerri L. Novak,Kris Chadee,Stefan J. Urbanski,Deirdre Church,Paul L. Beck +7 more
TL;DR: Both patients responded well to antibiotic therapy and E histolytica should be considered in new-onset colitis, especially in individuals from endemic areas.
Journal ArticleDOI
Turner Syndrome and apparent absent uterus: a case report and review of the literature.
TL;DR: A patient who initially presented with delayed puberty and an absent uterus on imaging with ultrasound and MRI was subsequently diagnosed with Turner Syndrome, which typically presents with early loss of ovarian function.
