Nanocellulose as a natural source for groundbreaking applications in materials science: Today’s state

The renewability, biocompatibility, and mechanical properties of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have made them an attractive material for numerous composite, biomedical, and rheological applications. However, for CNCs to shift from a laboratory curiosity to commercial applications, researchers must transition from CNCs extracted on the bench scale to material produced on an industrial scale. There are a number of companies currently producing kilogram to ton per day quantities of sulfuric acid-hydrolyzed CNCs as well as other nanocelluloses, as described herein. With the recent intensification of industrially produced CNCs and the variety of cellulose sources, hydrolysis methods, and purification procedures, the characterization of these materials becomes critical. Benchmarking Cellulose Nanocrystals: From the Laboratory to Industrial Production

By controlling the interaction of biological building blocks at the nanoscale, natural photonic nanostructures have been optimized to produce intense coloration. Inspired by such biological nanostructures, the possibility to design the visual appearance of a material by guiding the hierarchical self-assembly of its constituent components, ideally using natural materials, is an attractive route for rationally designed, sustainable manufacturing. Within the large variety of biological building blocks, cellulose nanocrystals are one of the most promising biosourced materials, primarily for their abundance, biocompatibility, and ability to readily organize into photonic structures. Here, the mechanisms underlying the formation of iridescent, vividly colored materials from colloidal liquid crystal suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals are reviewed and recent advances in structural control over the hierarchical assembly process are reported as a toolbox for the design of sophisticated optical materials.

The Self-Assembly of Cellulose Nanocrystals: Hierarchical Design of Visual Appearance.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are bio-based, high aspect ratio nanoparticles that are industrially produced in tonne-per-day quantities across the globe. CNCs can be used to improve the performance of a large range of materials such as emulsions and foams, biomedical devices, electronics and sensors, high-viscosity fluids and polymer composites. Their ability to do so, however, is highly dependent on the way they are produced. In this Review, we assess the properties of CNCs from more than 30 production routes and 40 biomass sources to help CNC users select the right material for their desired application. CNCs produced by various methods are evaluated against three target properties: colloidal stability, size and crystallinity index. Alternative production routes and/or starting materials are suggested to overcome challenges associated with CNC use, including increasing compatibility with hydrophobic materials, resistance to thermal degradation and colloidal stability in high ionic strength environments. Additionally, we discuss industrial production of CNCs, as well as considerations for increasing the yield and reducing the environmental impact of these processes. Overall, this Review guides researchers and CNC users towards a deeper understanding of how production processes can be modified to control CNC properties and subsequently tailor their performance. Cellulose nanocrystals are rigid rod-shaped nanoparticles that show promise as additives in composites, emulsions, foams and biomedical devices and as rheological modifiers. In this Review, the authors guide end users towards selecting cellulose sources and production routes that optimize the performance of cellulose nanocrystals in their intended application.

Production routes to tailor the performance of cellulose nanocrystals

The organization of nanoparticles in constrained geometries is an area of fundamental and practical importance. Spherical confinement of nanocolloids leads to new modes of packing, self-assembly, phase separation and relaxation of colloidal liquids; however, it remains an unexplored area of research for colloidal liquid crystals. Here we report the organization of cholesteric liquid crystal formed by nanorods in spherical droplets. For cholesteric suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals, with progressive confinement, we observe phase separation into a micrometer-size isotropic droplet core and a cholesteric shell formed by concentric nanocrystal layers. Further confinement results in a transition to a bipolar planar cholesteric morphology. The distribution of polymer, metal, carbon or metal oxide nanoparticles in the droplets is governed by the nanoparticle size and yields cholesteric droplets exhibiting fluorescence, plasmonic properties and magnetic actuation. This work advances our understanding of how the interplay of order, confinement and topological defects affects the morphology of soft matter.

Colloidal cholesteric liquid crystal in spherical confinement

We report magnetic birefringence measurements up to high fields (17.5 T) of dilute aqueous suspensions of rod-like cellulose nanocrystals with well characterized distributions of lengths, widths and thicknesses. We compare these data with three models, one with colinear (1), one with perpendicular cylindrically symmetric tensors for diamagnetic susceptibility and refractive index (2) and one with biaxial diamagnetic anisotropy (3). We find that taking into account polydispersities of length, width, and thickness is essential for accurate fitting and that model 1 is the most appropriate, presumably because of the twisting of the suspended nanocrystal along their long axis. The best-fitted susceptibility anisotropy was Δχz(xy) = χzz–(χxx+χyy)/2 = −2.44 × 10–6 when considering only the crystalline core of nanocrystals and, more appropriately, Δχz(xy) = −0.95 × 10–6 when including crystalline core and skin.
