Jolien Souffriau,Steven Timmermans,Tineke Vanderhaeghen,Charlotte Wallaeys,Kelly Van Looveren,Lindsy Aelbrecht,Sylviane Dewaele,Jolien Vandewalle,Evy Goossens,Serge Verbanck,Filip Boyen,Melanie Eggermont,Lindsey De Commer,Riet De Rycke,Michiel De Bruyne,Raul Y. TL;DR: Zinc modulates the gut microbiota, causing less induction of ISRE/IRF genes in crypt cells, less TNF‐induced necroptosis in Paneth cells, and less fatal evasion of gut bacteria into the system.
Journal ArticleDOI
Widespread Disease in Hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) Caused by Toxigenic Corynebacterium ulcerans.
An Martel,Filip Boyen,Jörg Rau,Tobias Eisenberg,Andreas Sing,Anja Berger,Koen Chiers,Sarah Van Praet,Serge Verbanck,Muriel Vervaeke,Frank Pasmans +10 more
TL;DR: In this article, poison-producing Corynebacterium ulcerans, a causative agent of diphtheria in humans, was isolated from hedgehogs in Belgium during the spring of 2020.
Posted ContentDOI
Toxigenic and zoonotic Corynebacterium ulcerans emerges from widespread hedgehog disease
An Martel,Filip Boyen,Jörg Rau,Tobias Eisenberg,Andreas Sing,Anja Berger,Koen Chiers,Sarah Van Praet,Serge Verbanck,Muriel Vervaeke,Frank Pasmans +10 more
TL;DR: Toxin-producing Corynebacterium ulcerans, causing diphtheria in humans, were isolated from 53 diseased hedgehogs during spring 2020 in Belgium and showed low levels of acquired antimicrobial resistance.
