The Exploitation and Conservation of Precious Corals

TL;DR: The analysis demonstrates that a paradigm shift is necessary in precious coral exploitation, not only to conserve habitats of high biodiversity but also to achieve sustainable fisheries and stabilize a specialized jewellery industry.
Journal ArticleDOI

The destruction of the 'animal forests' in the oceans: Towards an over- simplification of the benthic ecosystems

TL;DR: The possibility of over-simplifying processes in benthic areas due to a common use of resources is analysed, with special emphasis on certain direct impacts all over the world.
Journal ArticleDOI

Survey of deep-dwelling red coral (Corallium rubrum) populations at Cap de Creus (NW Mediterranean)

TL;DR: This study presents, the first quantitative data on the spatial distribution and structure of a population extending between 50 (common SCUBA limits) and 230 m depth, and compared it with shallow populations previously studied in the same area, to confirm that C. rubrum populations above 50 m Depth are exposed to a higher harvesting intensity than deeper populations in thesame area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Lipid biomarkers and trophic linkages between phytoplankton, zooplankton and anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) larvae in the NW Mediterranean

TL;DR: The results suggest an additional food resource for the anchovy that is complementary to a zooplankton diet, but probably of protozoan origin (i.e. microzooplankton).
Journal ArticleDOI

Spatial distribution patterns of the gorgonians Eunicella singularis, Paramuricea clavata, and Leptogorgia sarmentosa (Cape of Creus, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea)

TL;DR: The occurrence and abundance of the gorgonians Eunicella singularis, Paramuricea clavata, and Leptogorgia sarmentosa were investigated in northwestern Mediterranean benthic communities over a wide geographical and bathymetrical extent using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV).
