Journal ArticleDOI
Water contamination in urban south India: household storage practices and their implications for water safety and enteric infections.
TL;DR: Despite the requirements for provision of safe drinking water in municipal areas, in practice the water supplied in Vellore is contaminated and current household storage practices increase the level of contamination in at least two-thirds of households.
Journal ArticleDOI
A comparison of the sensitivity and fecal egg counts of the McMaster egg counting and Kato-Katz thick smear methods for soil-transmitted helminths.
Bruno Levecke,Jerzy M. Behnke,Sitara Swarna Rao Ajjampur,Marco Albonico,Shaali M. Ame,Johannes Charlier,Stefan M. Geiger,Nguyen Thi Viet Hoa,Romuald Isaka Kamwa Ngassam,Andrew C. Kotze,James S. McCarthy,Antonio Montresor,Maria Victoria Periago,Sheela Roy,Louis-Albert Tchuem Tchuenté,Dang Thi Cam Thach,Jozef Vercruysse +16 more
TL;DR: The McMaster egg counting method is an alternative method for monitoring large-scale treatment programs and is a robust (accurate multiplication factor) and accurate (reliable efficacy results) method, which can be easily standardized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anuradha Rose,Sheela Roy,Vinod Joseph Abraham,Gunnar Holmgren,Kuryan George,Vinohar Balraj,Sulochana Abraham,Jayaprakash Muliyil,Abraham Joseph,Gagandeep Kang +9 more
TL;DR: Solar disinfection of water is an inexpensive, effective, and acceptable method of increasing water safety in a resource limited environment, and can significantly decrease diarrhoeal morbidity in children.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence and clustering of soil-transmitted helminth infections in a tribal area in southern India.
Saravanakumar Puthupalayam Kaliappan,Santosh George,Mark Francis,Deepthi Kattula,Rajiv Sarkar,Shantidani Minz,Venkata Raghava Mohan,Kuryan George,Sheela Roy,Sitara Swarna Rao Ajjampur,Jayaprakash Muliyil,Gagandeep Kang +11 more
TL;DR: To estimate the prevalence, spatial patterns and clustering in the distribution of soil‐transmitted helminth (STH) infections, and factors associated with hookworm infections in a tribal population in Tamil Nadu, India, a large number of cases were reported.
Journal ArticleDOI
Point-of-Use Interventions to Decrease Contamination of Drinking Water: A Randomized, Controlled Pilot Study on Efficacy, Effectiveness, and Acceptability of Closed Containers, Moringa oleifera, and In-home Chlorination in Rural South India
Jacqueline Firth,Vinohar Balraj,Jayaprakash Muliyil,Sheela Roy,Lilly Michael Rani,R. Chandresekhar,Gagandeep Kang +6 more
TL;DR: A 6-month randomized, controlled intervention trial using chlorine, Moringa oleifera seeds, a closed valved container, and controls found no reduction in coliform counts in water samples from participants' homes, in contrast to the improvement seen with Escherichia coli seeded distilled water.
