Since the early 1990s, a large number of chaos-based communication systems have been proposed exploiting the properties of chaotic waveforms. The motivation lies in the significant advantages provided by this class of non-linear signals. For this aim, many communication schemes and applications have been specially designed for chaos-based communication systems where energy, data rate, and synchronization awareness are considered in most designs. Recently, the major focus, however, has been given to the non-coherent chaos-based systems to benefit from the advantages of chaotic signals and non-coherent detection and to avoid the use of chaotic synchronization, which suffers from weak performance in the presence of additive noise. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the entire wireless radio frequency chaos-based communication systems. First, it outlines the challenges of chaos implementations and synchronization methods, followed by comprehensive literature review and analysis of chaos-based coherent techniques and their applications. In the second part of the survey, we offer a taxonomy of the current literature by focusing on non-coherent detection methods. For each modulation class, this paper categorizes different transmission techniques by elaborating on its modulation, receiver type, data rate, complexity, energy efficiency, multiple access scheme, and performance. In addition, this survey reports on the analysis of tradeoff between different chaos-based communication systems. Finally, several concluding remarks are discussed.

Wireless Chaos-Based Communication Systems: A Comprehensive Survey

In this brief, a new noncoherent chaos-based communication scheme, named high-efficiency differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) (HE-DCSK), is proposed. By recycling each reference sample in DCSK, 2 bits of data can be carried in one data-modulated sample sequence, which offers our scheme double bandwidth efficiency and nonrepeated transmitted signal less prone to interception in comparison to DCSK. The bit-error performance of the proposed scheme is studied analytically based on Gaussian approximation for discrete-time implementations. Simulations in additive-white-Gaussian-noise channel are performed and compared with DCSK and correlation delay shift keying (CDSK) schemes. Results show that the bit-error rate performance of HE-DCSK can always outperform CDSK and be even better than DCSK with typical spreading factors and at reasonable Eb/No levels.

High-Efficiency Differential-Chaos-Shift-Keying Scheme for Chaos-Based Noncoherent Communication

A new multiresolution $M$ -ary differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) modulation scheme is proposed in this paper. It is a promising technique for providing a different quality of service for transmitted bits within a symbol according to their different bit error rate (BER) requirements based on the principle of nonuniformly spaced constellations. The new system not only is simple but also provides better antimultipath fading performance against various spreading factors, inheriting the advantages of the conventional DCSK system. Furthermore, the proposed scheme and its multicarrier version further increase spectral efficiency and use lower energy consumption at the same bandwidth as compared with the conventional DCSK and its multicarrier system. Explicit BER expressions of the new system are derived and analyzed over additive white Gaussian noise and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. All simulation results verify the prominent advantages of the new scheme and the accuracy of the new analytical approach.

Design and Performance Analysis of a New Multiresolution $M$ -Ary Differential Chaos Shift Keying Communication System

In this paper, a multiuser OFDM-based chaos shift keying (MU OFDM-DCSK) modulation is presented. In this system, the spreading operation is performed in time domain over the multicarrier frequencies. To allow the multiple access scenario without using excessive bandwidth, each user has $N_P$ predefined private frequencies from the $N$ available frequencies to transmit its reference signal and share with the other users the remaining frequencies to transmit its $M$ spread bits. In this new design, $N_P$ duplicated chaotic reference signals are used to transmit $M$ bits instead of using $M$ different chaotic reference signals as done in DCSK systems. Moreover, given that $N_P , the MU OFDM-DCSK scheme increases spectral efficiency, uses less energy and allows multiple-access scenario. Therefore, the use of OFDM technique reduces the integration complexity of the system where the parallel low pass filters are no longer needed to recover the transmitted data as in multicarrier DCSK scheme. Finally, the bit error rate performance is investigated under multipath Rayleigh fading channels, in the presence of multiuser and additive white Gaussian noise interferences. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of our analysis and show the advantages of this new hybrid design.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Multiuser OFDM Based Differential Chaos Shift Keying Communication System

We consider chaotic digital communications in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless multipath fading channels. In particular, we focus on systems that employ M -ary differential chaos shift keying (M-DCSK). We consider two transceiver schemes, both of which require no channel state information at either the transmitter or the receiver. The first one employs a distinct chaotic sequence at each transmit antenna to spread the same data symbol and transmits omnidirectionally. At each receive antenna, the corresponding differential detection statistic is formed, and these statistics are then combined with equal gain for symbol detection. The second scheme employs a single chaotic spreading sequence and makes use of adaptive transmit and receive beamforming. The beamformers are updated by using a simple stochastic gradient method that is based on the received signal power and a finite-rate feedback strategy. Simulation results show that both schemes can effectively exploit the spatial diversity of the underlying MIMO system, and the adaptive beamforming scheme significantly outperforms the omnidirectional transmission.

$M$ -DCSK-Based Chaotic Communications in MIMO Multipath Channels With No Channel State Information

This article considers the detection and localization of an underwater target by a sensor network consisting of an active acoustic source, multiple distributed passive sensors, and a fusion center (FC). As the reflected signal from the target could arrive with various directions, a set of collaborative sensors increase the detection probability. We first introduce the centralized generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector that utilizes the perfect information from sensor observations. In the case of a successful detection, this detector also provides the maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of the target location. In order to meet the stringent power and bandwidth constraints in underwater sensor networks, we then propose the decentralized GLRT scheme, where sensor observations are quantized into a few bits of data and then transmitted to the FC. The quantization thresholds are optimized by maximizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the null and alternative hypotheses. While the existing scan statistic based detector assumes that the sensor array which can observe the reflected signal, is contained in a rectangle area, our proposed decentralized GLRT scheme incorporates the signal reflection model into the detector, and estimates the area of affected sensor array, thus achieving higher accuracy. Finally, we extend the decentralized GLRT detector to the scenario where data are transmitted over error-prone channels, which is not considered in the existing studies. Numerical results demonstrate that the decentralized GLRT detector with only a small number of quantization bits can achieve a similar detection performance as the centralized GLRT.
