Journal ArticleDOI

Selection against late emergence and small offspring in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

TL;DR: The hypothesis that selection on juvenile traits may play an important role in the evolution of maternal traits in natural populations is supported, and egg size had fitness consequences independent of the effects of emergence time that directly affected body size at emergence and, in turn, survival and size at later life stages.
Journal ArticleDOI

Maternal effects of egg size in brown trout (Salmo trutta): norms of reaction to environmental quality

TL;DR: The results provide the first direct evidence for a causal relationship between egg size and fitness-related traits in fishes, independent of potentially confounding genetic effects, and indicate that previous studies have been biased by experimental conditions that excluded competitive asymmetries and environmental variability.
Journal ArticleDOI

Highly fecund mothers sacrifice offspring survival to maximize fitness

TL;DR: It is concluded that maximization of maternal fitness by sacrificing offspring survival may well be a general phenomenon among highly fecund organisms.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic divergence and interactions in the wild among native, farmed and hybrid Atlantic salmon

TL;DR: The results suggest that innate differences in behaviour and growth, that probably are linked closely to fitness, will threaten native populations through competition and disruption of local adaptations.
