TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore the implications of franchising on the intellectual capital development and knowledge management for retail organisations, given that for retail organizations asset intangibility is a particular feature, and break new ground in engaging currently topical concepts from leading-edge debates in the management literature (IC and KM) to examine franchising in service sector businesses.

Franchising as a Small Business Growth Strategy A Resource-Based View of Organizational Development

TL;DR: Stanworth et al. as mentioned in this paper used case study material from a number of 'exemplar' franchise companies in the development of a resource-based view of organizational development to examine the role of franchisees who, while not totally independent in the sense of the conventional small business person, certainly do not see themselves as conventional employees either and have certain expectations of participation in the process of which they are an integral part.

Retail Franchising: An Intellectual Capital Perspective

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined four aspects of intellectual capital: human, structural, relational, and competitive, and found that the decision to franchise depends on the perception of whether intellectual capital can best be captured through franchising or a company owned firm.
