Under treatment of pneumonia among children under 5 years of age in a malaria-endemic area: population-based surveillance study conducted in Manhica district- rural, Mozambique
Sozinho Acácio,Jennifer R. Verani,Miguel A. Lanaspa,Tarayn Fairlie,Tacilta Nhampossa,María Rupérez,Pedro Aide,Brian D. Plikaytis,Charfudin Sacoor,Eusebio Macete,Pedro L. Alonso,Betuel Sigaúque +11 more
TL;DR: Adherence to recommended management of severe pneumonia was high in a hospital outpatient department, but suboptimal in health centers, and diagnosis of malaria was the strongest risk factor for incorrect management.
Journal ArticleDOI
Rotavirus A strains obtained from children with acute gastroenteritis in Mozambique, 2012-2013: G and P genotypes and phylogenetic analysis of VP7 and partial VP4 genes
Eva D. João,Amy Strydom,Hester G. O'Neill,Assa Júlio Cuamba,Marta Cassocera,Sozinho Acácio,Inacio Mandomando,Lithabiso Motanyane,Nicola Page,Nilsa de Deus +9 more
TL;DR: B baseline data is generated for future monitoring of any changes in rotavirus strains in response to vaccine pressure and the VP7 and VP8* encoding genes showed, for the majority of the Mozambican strains, that they clustered with other African strains based on genotype.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology of Rotavirus Infection in Children from a Rural and Urban Area, in Maputo, Southern Mozambique, before Vaccine Introduction.
Nilsa de Deus,Eva D. João,Assa Júlio Cuamba,Marta Cassocera,Leopoldina Luis,Sozinho Acácio,Inacio Mandomando,Orvalho Augusto,Nicola Page +8 more
TL;DR: The highest prevalence of rotavirus infection was observed in children between 6 and 11 months old, and it was also observed that 162 of the children were underweight (weight-for-age z-score < -2), of which 61 were infected by rotvirus.
Journal ArticleDOI
First identification of genotypes of Enterocytozoon bieneusi (Microsporidia) among symptomatic and asymptomatic children in Mozambique.
Aly Salimo Muadica,Augusto Messa,Alejandro Dashti,Sooria Balasegaram,Mónica Santín,Filomena Manjate,Percina Chirinda,Marcelino Garrine,Marcelino Garrine,Delfino Vubil,Sozinho Acácio,Pamela C. TL;DR: The first investigation of E. bieneusi genotypes in Mozambique is reported with the identification of three previously reported genotype in humans as well as a novel genotype (HhMzEb1) that belonged to the Group 1 that includes genotypes with low host specificity and the potential for zoonotic and cross-species transmission.
Journal ArticleDOI

Delfino Vubil,Sozinho Acácio,Llorenç Quintó,Clara Ballesté-Delpierre,Tacilta Nhampossa,Karen L. Kotloff,Myron M. Levine,Pedro L. Alonso,James P. Nataro,Tamer H. Farag,Jordi Vila,Inacio Mandomando +11 more
