Journal ArticleDOI

Betalains--a new class of dietary cationized antioxidants.

TL;DR: Red beet products used regularly in the diet may provide protection against certain oxidative stress-related disorders in humans, and betanin bioavailability in humans was demonstrated with four volunteers who consumed 300 mL of red beet juice, containing 120 mg of the antioxidant.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitric oxide as an antioxidant

TL;DR: The results showed that metmyoglobin and oxymyoglobin were activated by H2O2 to ferryl myoglobin, which initiates membrane lipid peroxidation; but not nitric oxide-myoglobin,Which, during interaction with H2 O2, did not form ferryl but meetmyoglobin which only poorly affected lipid per oxidation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Initiation of membranal lipid peroxidation by activated metmyoglobin and methemoglobin.

TL;DR: In this model system, it was found that small amounts of H2O2 (1-10 microM) could activate MetMb for significant lipid peroxidation and Membranal lipidPeroxidation initiated by activated MetMm was inhibited by several reducing compounds and antioxidants.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitric oxide, an inhibitor of lipid oxidation by lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase and hemoglobin.

Joseph Kanner, +2 more
- 01 Jan 1992 -
TL;DR: Nitric oxide may act as a modulator of the arachidonic acid cascade and in the generation of oxygen-active species and the radical scavenging ability of the nitroxide radical.
Journal ArticleDOI

PH-dependent forms of red wine anthocyanins as antioxidants.

TL;DR: The pseudo-base and quinoidal-base malvidin 3-glucoside significantly inhibited the peroxidation of linoleate by myoglobin and both compounds were found to work better than catechin, a well-known antioxidant.
