Journal ArticleDOI
Simple non-invasive fibrosis scoring systems can reliably exclude advanced fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
TL;DR: The ALT/AST ratio, FIB-4 and NAFLD fibrosis scores can reliably exclude advanced fibrosis in a high proportion of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, allowing liver biopsy to be used in a more directed manner.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatocellular cancer: The impact of obesity, type 2 diabetes and a multidisciplinary team
Jessica K Dyson,B Jaques,Dipankar Chattopadyhay,R. Lochan,Janine Graham,Debasish Das,Tahira Aslam,I Patanwala,Sameer Gaggar,Michael Cole,K Sumpter,Stephen Stewart,John Rose,Mark Hudson,Derek Manas,Helen L. Reeves,Helen L. Reeves +16 more
TL;DR: HCC related mortality is increasing, with typical patients being elderly with metabolic risk factors, but older patients with co-morbidities can do well, managed, within a specialist multidisciplinary team if their cancer is detected pre-symptomatically.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of factors predictive of mortality in alcoholic hepatitis and derivation and validation of the Glasgow alcoholic hepatitis score
Ewan Forrest,C D J Evans,Stephen Stewart,Martin Phillips,Ye Htun Oo,Norma C. McAvoy,N C Fisher,S. Singhal,A Brind,Geoffrey Haydon,John O'Grady,Christopher P. Day,Peter C. Hayes,Lilian S. Murray,Allan J. Morris +14 more
TL;DR: Using variables associated with mortality the authors have derived and validated an accurate scoring system to assess outcome in alcoholic hepatitis and this score was able to identify patients at greatest risk of death throughout their admission.
Journal ArticleDOI
Alcoholic liver disease: new insights into mechanisms and preventative strategies
TL;DR: Evidence points towards an elaborate interplay between metabolism, inflammation and immunity in the development of steatosis, hepatitis and fibrosis, which offers many potential susceptibility loci, as well as sites for potential therapeutic intervention.
Journal ArticleDOI
A randomized trial of antioxidant therapy alone or with corticosteroids in acute alcoholic hepatitis
Stephen Stewart,Martin Prince,Margaret F. Bassendine,Margaret F. Bassendine,Mark Hudson,Oliver F. W. James,Oliver F. W. James,David Jones,David Jones,Christopher O. Record,Christopher P. Day,Christopher P. Day +11 more
TL;DR: Antioxidant therapy, alone or in combination with corticosteroids, does not improve 6-month survival in severe alcoholic hepatitis.
