Optical properties of biological tissues: a review.

The known optical properties (absorption, scattering, total attenuation, effective attenuation, and/or anisotropy coefficients) of various biological tissues at a variety of wavelengths are reviewed. A review of the optical properties of biological tissues

Photoacoustic imaging (also called optoacoustic or thermoacoustic imaging) has the potential to image animal or human organs, such as the breast and the brain, with simultaneous high contrast and high spatial resolution. This article provides an overview of the rapidly expanding field of photoacoustic imaging for biomedical applications. Imaging techniques, including depth profiling in layered media, scanning tomography with focused ultrasonic transducers, image forming with an acoustic lens, and computed tomography with unfocused transducers, are introduced. Special emphasis is placed on computed tomography, including reconstruction algorithms, spatial resolution, and related recent experiments. Promising biomedical applications are discussed throughout the text, including (1) tomographic imaging of the skin and other superficial organs by laser-induced photoacoustic microscopy, which offers the critical advantages, over current high-resolution optical imaging modalities, of deeper imaging depth and higher absorptioncontrasts, (2) breast cancerdetection by near-infrared light or radio-frequency–wave-induced photoacoustic imaging, which has important potential for early detection, and (3) small animal imaging by laser-induced photoacoustic imaging, which measures unique optical absorptioncontrasts related to important biochemical information and provides better resolution in deep tissues than optical imaging.

Corrigendum: Optical properties of biological tissues: a review

Three Monte Carlo programs were developed which keep track of the status of polarization of light traveling through mono-disperse solutions of micro-spheres. These programs were described in detail in our previous article [1]. This paper illustrates a series of Monte Carlo simulations that model common experiments of light transmission and reflection of scattering media. Furthermore the codes were expanded to model light propagating through poly-disperse solutions of micro-spheres of different radii distributions.

Three Monte Carlo programs of polarized light transport into scattering media: part II.

Optoacoustic imaging is based on the generation of thermoelastic stress waves by heating an object in an optically heterogeneous medium with a short laser pulse. The stress waves contain information about the distribution of structures with preferential optical absorption. Detection of the waves with an array of broadband ultrasound detectors at the surface of the medium and applying a backprojection algorithm is used to create a map of absorbed energy inside the medium. With conventional reconstruction methods a large number of detector elements and filtering of the signals are necessary to reduce backprojection artifacts. As an alternative this study proposes an iterative procedure. The algorithm is designed to minimize the error between measured signals and signals calculated from the reconstructed image. Iterative reconstruction algorithm for optoacoustic imaging

Melanosomes are a primary target of Q-switched ruby laser irradiation in guinea pig skin.

IL-23 and Th17 cells producing IL-17A and IL-22 are found in excess in skin affected by psoriasis. Previous studies showed that IL-22, but not IL-17A, mediates psoriasis-like epidermal hyperplasia following recombinant murine (rm)IL-23 injections into skin. To further investigate the role of IL-17A, ears of mice were injected with rmIL-23. Investigators blinded to treatment conditions and mouse genotypes measured ear swelling, epidermal thickness, and cytokine expression. In wild-type (WT) mice, rmIL-23 induced ear swelling (p < 0.001, all p values versus saline), epidermal hyperplasia by histology (p < 0.001) and confocal microscopy (p < 0.004), and expression of both IL-17A and IL-22. As expected, rmIL-23 injections into IL-22(-/-) mice resulted in relatively little ear swelling (p < 0.09) and epidermal hyperplasia (p < 0.51 by histology and p < 0.75 by confocal microscopy). Notably, rmIL-23 injections into IL-17A(-/-) mice produced little ear swelling (p < 0.001, versus IL-23-injected WT mice) and epidermal hyperplasia (p < 0.001 by histology and p < 0.005 by confocal microscopy), even though IL-22 was readily induced in these mice. Furthermore, systemic delivery of blocking Abs directed against either IL-22 or IL-17A completely inhibited IL-23-induced epidermal hyperplasia in WT mice. These results demonstrate that IL-17A, like IL-22, is a downstream mediator for IL-23-induced changes in murine skin and that both of these Th17 cytokines are necessary to produce IL-23-mediated skin pathology. IL-17A may represent an attractive therapeutic target in individuals with psoriasis by blocking downstream effects of IL-23.
