Plasma Lipoproteins and Apolipoproteins as Predictors of Cardiovascular Risk and Treatment Benefit in the PROspective Study of Pravastatin in the Elderly at Risk (PROSPER)
Chris J. Packard,Ian Ford,Michele Robertson,James Shepherd,Gerard J. Blauw,Mike Murphy,Edward L.E.M. Bollen,Brendan M. Buckley,Stuart M. Cobbe,Allan Gaw,Michael E. Hyland,J. Wouter Jukema,Adriaan M. Kamper,Peter W. Macfarlane,Ivan J. Perry,David J. Stott,Brian Sweeney,C. Twomey,Rudi G. J. Westendorp +18 more
TL;DR: In people >70 years old, HDLc appears to be a key predictor of risk and of treatment benefit, and findings in PROSPER suggest that statin therapy could usefully be targeted to those with HDLc <1.15 mmol/L or an LDLc/HDLc ratio >3.3.
Journal ArticleDOI
Serial Metabolic Measurements and Conversion to Type 2 Diabetes in the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study Specific Elevations in Alanine Aminotransferase and Triglycerides Suggest Hepatic Fat Accumulation as a Potential Contributing Factor
Naveed Sattar,Alex McConnachie,Ian Ford,Allan Gaw,Stephen J. Cleland,Nita G. Forouhi,Peter McFarlane,James Shepherd,Stuart M. Cobbe,Chris J. Packard +9 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that a relatively rapid rise in fasting glucose levels is frequent in converters to diabetes and that associated increases over time in ALT and potentially triglyceride suggest hepatic fat accumulation as a contributing factor for conversion to diabetes in men at risk.
Journal ArticleDOI
Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure in Cardiology Practice: Reciprocal Impact and Combined Management From the Perspective of Atrial Fibrillation: Results of the Euro Heart Survey on Atrial Fibrillation
Robby Nieuwlaat,Luc W. Eurlings,John G.F. Cleland,Stuart M. Cobbe,Panos E. Vardas,Alessandro Capucci,Jose Lopez-Sendon,Joan G. Meeder,Yigal M. Pinto,Harry J.G.M. Crijns +9 more
TL;DR: The prescription rate of guideline-recommended drug therapy for AF and LVSD-HF is low and Randomized controlled trials targeting this highly prevalent subgroup with AF and HF are warranted.
Journal ArticleDOI
Baseline Risk Factors and their Association With Outcome in the West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study
TL;DR: In this article, the authors presented an analysis of the influence of baseline risk factors on coronary events and total mortality in the trial, and their interaction with therapy, using the Cox proportional hazards model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Are markers of inflammation more strongly associated with risk for fatal than for nonfatal vascular events
Naveed Sattar,Heather Murray,Paul Welsh,Gerard J. Blauw,Brendan M. Buckley,Stuart M. Cobbe,Anton J. M. de Craen,Gordon D.O. Lowe,J. Wouter Jukema,Peter W. Macfarlane,Michael B. Murphy,David J. Stott,Rudi G. J. Westendorp,James Shepherd,Ian Ford,Chris J. Packard +15 more
TL;DR: It is found that inflammatory markers may be more strongly associated with risk of fatal vascular events than nonfatal vascular events.
