Journal ArticleDOI

Quinoid metabolites of 4-monochlorobiphenyl induce gene mutations in cultured Chinese hamster v79 cells.

TL;DR: The present study demonstrates for the first time the mutagenicity of PCB2 metabolites in mammalian cells and identifies quinoid metabolites of PCB3 as potential ultimate mutagens.
Journal ArticleDOI

2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-1,4-benzoquinone increases the frequency of micronuclei and shortens telomeres.

TL;DR: A large increase in micronuclei frequency and cell cycle perturbation in V79 cells, and a marked decrease in telomere length in HaCaT cells exposed to 2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-1,4-benzoquinone (PCB3pQ).
Journal ArticleDOI

Estrogenicity and androgenicity screening of PCB sulfate monoesters in human breast cancer MCF-7 cells

TL;DR: The data suggest that sulfation of HO-PCBs is indeed reducing their cytotoxicity and estrogenicity, but may produce other endocrine disruptive activities at very low concentrations.
Journal ArticleDOI

Polyploidy-induction by dihydroxylated monochlorobiphenyls: Structure-activity-relationships

TL;DR: Different PCB metabolites may induce carcinogenesis by different mechanisms, including SCE induction or polyploidization, and the finding that up to 96% of metaphases from cells treated with PCB2- or PCB3-HQ were tetraploid was surprising, some of which had dark and some Harlequin-stained chromosomes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Toxicity assessment of air-delivered particle-bound polybrominated diphenyl ethers.

TL;DR: An in vitro exposure system capable of generating particle-bound PBDEs mimicking dusts containing PBDE congeners (BDEs 35, 47 and 99) and delivering them directly onto lung cells grown at an air-liquid interface (ALI) is developed.
