The scope of this article was to analyze Brazilian scientific articles that assess the quality of life related to the health of children and adolescents. The databases consulted were SciELO and Bireme involving a total of 30 articles published between 1990 and 2008. The articles confirmed the predominance of quantitative methodologies (70%) with a high incidence of applications of HRQL (66.7%) and generic texts (28.6%). The concept of quality of life was evaluated from two standpoints: in the context of scientific research and as part of the desired results of healthcare and public policy. This construct is presented from a multidimensional perspective, embracing the social, psychological, physical and individual dimensions, which is based on the premise that the individuals themselves must assess their own quality of life. The article draws attention to the need to create and use instruments of quality of life for children and adolescents that enhance their perspective about their health processes using appropriate tools for each phase of development. The assessment of quality of life should be incorporated in clinical assessment since chronic illness has repercussions in the many dimensions of the life.

Qualidade de vida de crianças e adolescentes: uma revisão bibliográfica

This study aims to delineate the clinical and socio-demographic profile of the clients assisted by a school-clinic of Psychology of a private university in southern Brazil. We assessed the clinical records of 604 patients under individual psychological interventions between 2003 and 2007. The results showed that: a) the majority of patients were women, but among children the majority were of masculine gender; b) the main complaints were of depressive symptoms, but variations were also verified in accordance with age and gender; c) most of the patients had sought psychological care spontaneously; d) dropouts levels were similar to those of other studies in this context; e) no significant associations were found among dropout and age, gender and waiting time. The study revealed that the clinical and socio-demographic profile of clientele seen in this service is consistent with other training clinics in Rio Grande do Sul and in other states of Brazil. The results indicate the overall effectiveness of the service and of the adopted model of brief psychotherapy. Inconsistencies in patient’s records have been responsible for the methodological limitations of the study. The research enabled the adoption of several procedures to improve the quality of records and to support further studies.

Características clínicas e sociodemográficas da clientela atendida em uma clínica-escola de psicologia

This research aimed to analyze the quality of life of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) survivors. A longitudinal evaluation was carried out pre-BMT, immediately after BMT and post-BMT. The initial sample included 17 patients, 10 of who were evaluated in the three periods. The data collection instruments were: MOS SF-36 and FACT-BMT. The results revealed a significant decrease in quality of life when the patient left the nursing ward, especially in social and physical features. However, recovery in these aspects and improvement of others were observed, such as functional capacity post-BMT. No significant differences were observed between scores in the pre-BMT period and one year after the transplantation.

Qualidade de Vida de Sobreviventes do Transplante de Medula Óssea (TMO): Um Estudo Prospectivo

The goal of this study is to identify the Brazilian research centers where systematic preventive interventions are developed and describe the national program evaluation studies. For that, we conducted a systematic review of the national literature on two databases (Scielo and Pepsic), through the keywords "prevention", "basic care", "primary care" and " health promotion ", which resulted in 25 articles, describing 42 interventions. The results indicated a predominance of extensive interventions, with small samples, performed weekly, for promoting skills in children and adolescents in educational settings. Mostly, studies did not include follow-up assessments, neither discussed the implications of the findings for public policy. The researchers are mostly psychologists, affiliated to public universities in the Southeast region. It is concluded that the improvement of research networks and the expansion of exchanges between researches and public policy can foster the advancement of the area in the country.

Programas Preventivos Brasileiros: Quem Faz e como É Feita a Prevenção em Saúde Mental?

One of the difficulties found in the development of psychology is the guarantee of competence in training for their peers. In this sense, the purpose of this article is to discuss the importance of clinical supervision as an essential tool for developing therapeutic skills in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in psychology undergraduates. From a brief background on the topic, the text emphasizes the three dimensions of competence in the clinical management of CBT, with emphasis on three dimensions: knowledge, technical skill and ability for inter-relationships. Then, the focus is on clinical supervision and activities that are necessary for the development of skills in CBT. Because of its specificity, the format of the supervision, training exercises, discussion of case and supervisor-supervising relationship were listed as essential. Social skills promotion in the child's relationships, in a preventive level, provides the development of and improvement in social competence, resulting in greater adaptability to the social environment. This research aimed to verify the effectiveness of a preventive program of social skills development in children between 4 and 6 years old and their parents. The results reflect the performance of 9 children of both sexes, with age between 5 and 6 years. CBCL (Achenbach, 1991) was used as the analysis instrument, answered by parents about the children's behaviors, before and after the participation in the program. Based on this analysis, it was possible to observe that there is a statistical difference between CBCL results before and after intervention, indicating changes in parents' perception about their children's behaviors and the probable increase in behaviors that facilitate social interaction.

Promoção de habilidades sociais em pré-escolares

O desenvolvimento humano atipico interfere no processo de aprendizado da crianca que o apresenta, sendo que os pais tem importante papel no sentido de estimular o desenvolvimento dos filhos. Porem, o envolvimento paterno sofre influencia das crencas que os pais tem sobre o desenvolvimento dos filhos. Para avalia-las, Suizzo (2002) construiu a Escala de Crencas Parentais e Praticas de Cuidado (E-CPPC). Assim, na presente pesquisa foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva e transversal, utilizando o E-CPPC com 75 maes de criancas com diagnostico de deficiencia intelectual, das quais 41 sem fenotipo (grupo que abrangeu, dentre outros, criancas com Transtorno do Espectro Autista), cuja deficiencia intelectual foi percebida nos primeiros anos de vida, e 34 maes de criancas com Sindrome de Down, identificada quando do nascimento. Das criancas com Sindrome de Down, 94,11% frequentavam escola especial e este percentual baixou para 80,48% nas criancas sem fenotipo. As maes dos dois agrupamentos apontaram em primeiro lugar a dimensao Apresentacao Apropriada do bebe, envolvendo aqui a valorizacao de cuidados basicos, vindo a seguir: Estimulacao; Responsividade/vinculo; Disciplina. Na analise de pares de dimensoes do E-CPPC foi percebido que somente no par de dimensoes Apresentacao-Responsividade/vinculo houve diferenca entre os grupos, sendo positiva e com significância estatistica nas criancas com Sindrome de Down e nao apresentando relacao significativa no outro grupo. Poder contar com rede de apoio o quanto antes surge como sugestao importante aos dois grupos.

Crenças e práticas educativas de mães de crianças com desenvolvimento atípico

A critical analysis of a project allows refining it by identifying the aspects that make it difficult in order to facilitate the inclusion of effective strategies for the correction of the problems. Some authors suggest that the evaluation of preventive programs is made, considering the stages: analysis of the problem, delineation of the program, accomplishment of test-pilot, accomplishment of advanced test, dissemination or enlargement for other contexts. The objective of this paper is to evaluate a preventive project that aim to stimulate the development of social abilities in children from 6 to 8 years old. It was observed that the analyzed project has some positive aspects: it promotes subtle changes in the behavior of the children and sensitizes the parents in order to stimulate pro-social behaviors. On the other hand, it allowed to detect that a non use of an effective strategy of recruitment and retention of the participants can compromise the transformation of this project in a program.

Avaliação de programas preventivos: relato de experiência

The aim of this study was to assess the physical performance (Karnofsky or Lansky's Performance Scale), as well as the social/familial, emotional, functional and cancer treatment by bone marrow transplant (FACT-BMT battery). Subjects were all adolescents (13 to 20 years of age) who underwent a transplant at the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (Servico de Transplante de Medula Ossea) of the University Hospital (Hospital de Clinicas) of Universidade Federal do Parana, (STMO-HC-UFPR) in the calendar year (January to December) of 1999. The initial sample consisted of thirteen patients (seven male, six female), of whom four had a previous diagnosis of a neoplastic condition and nine of a non-neoplastic condition. Allografts were used in all cases. The study instruments and scales were applied twice: firstly, in the month prior to the procedure and secondly, on the hundredth day afterwards. Three patients died before the second assessment was carried out. Therefore, only 10 patients completed the study and were the subject of the full analysis. Results show that although 4/10 of the patients had an improved physical performance as shown by the Karnofsky and Lansky's Performance Scale, 9/10 reported difficulties to resume day-to-day activities and chores (professional, educational and homework), as shown by the FACT-BMT battery. In other domains assessed, results showed variations between the pre and post procedures but without reaching statistical significance. It could be concluded that the therapeutic intervention in itself may affect the quality of life of the subjects. It has to be said, however, that this study was carried out within the frame of continuous medical treatment and this may have acted as a confounder. Further long-term longitudinal studies are, therefore, required to improve our understanding of these issues.
