The future of road transport in Europe. Environmental implications of automated, connected and low-carbon mobility

This paper investigates the accuracy and robustness of car-following (CF) and adaptive cruise control (ACC) models used to simulate measured driving behaviour of commercial ACCs. To this aim, a general modelling framework is proposed, in which ACC and CF models have been incrementally augmented with physics extensions; namely, perception delay, linear or nonlinear vehicle dynamics, and acceleration constraints. The framework has been applied to the Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), the Gipps model, and to three basic ACCs. These are a linear controller coupled with a constant time-headway spacing policy and with two other policies derived from the traffic flow theory, which are the IDM desired-distance function and the Gipps equilibrium distance-speed function. The ninety models resulting from the combination of the five base models and the aforementioned physics extensions, have been assessed and compared through a vast calibration and validation experiment against measured trajectory data of low-level automated vehicles. When a single extension has been applied, perception delay and linear dynamics have been the extensions to mostly increase modelling accuracy, whatsoever the base model considered. Concerning models, Gipps-based ones have outperformed all other CF and ACC models in calibration. Even among ACCs, the linear controllers coupled with a Gipps spacing policy have been the best performing. On the other hand, IDM-based models have been by far the most robust in validation, showing almost no crash when calibrated parameters have been used to simulate different trajectories. Overall, the paper shows the importance of cross-fertilization between traffic flow and vehicle studies.

Physics-augmented models to simulate commercial adaptive cruise control (ACC) systems.

This paper analyzes trajectory observations from vehicles driving in platoon formation and they are equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) systems; aiming to quantify response delays. When a preceding vehicle induces a perturbation, the delay until the reaction of the following vehicle, often quoted as observable response time, can have negative implication to the traffic flow and other factors such as energy consumption, stability and safety. Quantifying such delays can help towards more realistic traffic simulation modeling. The analysis is performed based on empirical observations from three well-known experimental campaigns in the literature with data from ACC-driven and CACC-driven vehicle platoons. Three state-of-the-art techniques were implemented to provide quantitative results for the observed response times. The benefits and downsides of each technique are discussed as well. The results show that ACC systems do not exhibit a significant improvement compared to human drivers, yet, it can be concluded that the additional vehicle-to-vehicle communication incorporated in the CACC systems allows for a substantially higher traffic flow and possibly other benefits.

Automated driving has attracted intense attention in the media and among the general public, based on extremely optimistic predictions from some industry participants, but these have started to become more realistic in the last couple of years, after the “hype cycle” for automation peaked. This paper explains the opportunities for Automated Driving System (ADS) technology to improve the urban transport of people and goods, together with the challenges that will limit the scope and timing of the deployment of urban ADS. The discussion emphasizes the diversity of ADS applications and services, each of which has its own opportunities, challenges, and uncertainties, leading to diverse deployment scopes and schedules. The associated challenges are sufficiently daunting that ADS deployment will lag behind electrification and connectivity, leaving more time for cities to prepare for it.

Opportunities, Challenges, and Uncertainties in Urban Road Transport Automation

Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) promise to significantly improve road traffic. To a certain extent, this situation is similar to the expectations at the end of the last century about the positive effects that the introduction of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems would have had on motorway traffic. The parallelism is interesting because ACC equipped vehicles represent the first level of vehicle automation and are now widely available on the market. In this light, studying ACC impacts can help to anticipate potential problems related to its widespread application and to avoid that AVs and CAVs will lead to the same problems. Only a few test-campaigns had been carried out studying the ACC impacts under real-world driving conditions in quantitative terms. To bridge this gap, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission has organized a number of experimental campaigns involving several ACC-equipped vehicles to study different implications of their widespread. In this context, the present paper summarizes the outcomes of a test campaign involving 10 commercially available ACC-equipped vehicles. The test campaign has been executed in two different test-tracks of the ZalaZONE proving ground, in Hungary. The tests have been carried out at low-speeds (30–60 km/h) and have involved platoons of vehicles of different brands and different powertrains, which were tested in a variety of vehicle orders and with different settings of their ACC systems. Test results have been used to derive information about the properties of the different ACC systems, to study their string stability, to study the effect of ACC systems on traffic flow, and to draw inference about the possible implications on energy consumption and traffic safety. Results confirm the previous findings in terms of string instability of the ACC and highlight that in the present form, ACC systems will possibly lead to higher energy consumption and introduce new safety risks when their penetration in the fleet increases. However, they also highlight that the materialization of the above findings for AVs depends on the operational logic that manufacturers will adopt during the implementation phase. Therefore, results suggest that functional requirements to guarantee string stability and in general to not disrupt the normal flow of traffic should be introduced both for ACC and for any automated system that will be placed on the market in the future.
