Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of a mobile phone short message service on antiretroviral treatment adherence in Kenya (WelTel Kenya1): a randomised trial
Richard T. Lester,Richard T. Lester,Richard T. Lester,Paul Ritvo,Edward J Mills,Antony Kariri,Sarah Karanja,Michael H. Chung,William Jack,James Habyarimana,Mohsen Sadatsafavi,Mehdi Najafzadeh,Carlo A. Marra,Benson B. Estambale,Elizabeth N. Ngugi,T. Blake Ball,Lehana Thabane,Lawrence Gelmon,Lawrence Gelmon,Joshua Kimani,Joshua Kimani,Marta Ackers,Francis A. Plummer,Francis A. Plummer +23 more
TL;DR: Patients who received SMS support had significantly improved ART adherence and rates of viral suppression compared with the control individuals, suggesting mobile phones might be effective tools to improve patient outcome in resource-limited settings.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mechanisms of CD4+ T lymphocyte cell death in human immunodeficiency virus infection and AIDS.
TL;DR: There is evidence that as AIDS progresses cytokine dysregulation occurs, and the overproduction of type-2 cytokines increases susceptibility to AICD whereas type-1 cytokines (IL-12, IFN-gamma) may be protective.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV-1-specific mucosal IgA in a cohort of HIV-1-resistant Kenyan sex workers.
Rupert Kaul,Daria Trabattoni,Job J. Bwayo,Donatella Arienti,Arianna Zagliani,Francis M. Mwangi,C. Kariuki,Elizabeth N. Ngugi,Kelly S. MacDonald,T. Blake Ball,Mario Clerici,Francis A. Plummer +11 more
TL;DR: A role is suggested for mucosal HIV-1-specific IgA responses in HIV- 1 resistance, independent of host cellular responses, in Kenyan female sex workers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toll-like receptor expression and responsiveness are increased in viraemic HIV-1 infection.
Richard T. Lester,Xiao-Dan Yao,T. Blake Ball,Lyle R. McKinnon,Rupert Kaul,Charles Wachihi,Walter Jaoko,Francis A. Plummer,Kenneth L. Rosenthal +8 more
TL;DR: It is indicated that chronic viraemic HIV-1 is associated with increased TLR expression and responsiveness, which may perpetuate innate immune dysfunction and activation that underlies HIV pathogenesis, and thus reveal potential new targets for therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Development and characterisation of neutralising monoclonal antibody to the SARS-coronavirus.
Jody D. Berry,Steven M. Jones,Steven M. Jones,Michael Drebot,Michael Drebot,Anton Andonov,Anton Andonov,Marta I. Sabara,Xin Y. Yuan,Hana M. Weingartl,Lisa Fernando,Peter Marszal,Jason Gren,Brigitte Nicolas,Maya Andonova,Francesca Ranada,Michael J. Gubbins,T. Blake Ball,Paul Kitching,Yan Li,Amin Kabani,Amin Kabani,Frank Plummer,Frank Plummer +23 more
TL;DR: The development and immunochemical characterisation of a panel of murine monoclonal antibodies against the SARS-CoV is presented, based upon their specificity, binding requirements, and biological activity, and the utility of these mAbs for diagnostic development is demonstrated.
