One of the most challenging and time-consuming problems in experimental fluid mechanics is the measurement of the overall flow field properties, such as the velocity, vorticity, and pressure fields. Local measurements of the velocity field (i.e., at individual points) are now done routinely in many experiments using hot-wire (HW) or laser velocimetry (LV). However, many of the flow fields of current interest, such as coherent structures in shear flows or wake flows, are highly unsteady. HW or LV data of such flows are difficult to interpret, as both spatial and temporal information of the entire flow field are required and these methods are commonly limited to simultaneous measurements at only a few spatial locations.

Particle Image Velocimetry

Thrust-producing harmonically oscillating foils are studied through force and power measurements, as well as visualization data, to classify the principal characteristics of the flow around and in the wake of the foil. Visualization data are obtained using digital particle image velocimetry at Reynolds number 1100, and force and power data are measured at Reynolds number 40 000. The experimental results are compared with theoretical predictions of linear and nonlinear inviscid theory and it is found that agreement between theory and experiment is good over a certain parametric range, when the wake consists of an array of alternating vortices and either very weak or no leading-edge vortices form. High propulsive efficiency, as high as 87%, is measured experimentally under conditions of optimal wake formation. Visualization results elucidate the basic mechanisms involved and show that conditions of high efficiency are associated with the formation on alternating sides of the foil of a moderately strong leading-edge vortex per half-cycle, which is convected downstream and interacts with trailing-edge vorticity, resulting eventually in the formation of a reverse Karman street. The phase angle between transverse oscillation and angular motion is the critical parameter affecting the interaction of leading-edge and trailing-edge vorticity, as well as the efficiency of propulsion.

Oscillating foils of high propulsive efficiency

Interest in novel forms of marine propulsion and maneuvering has sparked a number of studies on unsteadily operating propulsors. We review recent experimental and theoretical work identifying the principal mechanism for producing propulsive and transient forces in oscillating flexible bodies and fins in water, the formation and control of large-scale vortices. Connection with studies on live fish is made, explaining the observed outstanding fish agility.

Hydrodynamics of Fishlike Swimming

The dynamic characteristics of the pressure and velocity fields of the unsteady incompressible laminar wake behind a circular cylinder are investigated numerically and analysed physically. The governing equations, written in a velocity—pressure formulation and in conservative form, are solved by a predictor—corrector pressure method, a finite-volume second-order-accurate scheme and an alternating-direction-implicit (ADI) procedure. The initiation mechanism for vortex shedding and the evaluation of the unsteady body forces are presented for Reynolds-number values of 100, 200 and 1000.The vortex shedding is generated by a physical perturbation imposed numerically for a short time. The flow transition becomes periodic after a transient time interval. The frequency of the drag and lift oscillations agree well with the experimental data.The study of the interactions of the unsteady pressure and velocity fields shows the phase relations between the pressure and velocity, and the influence of different factors: the strongly rotational viscous region, the convection of the eddies and the almost inviscid flow.The interactions among the different scales of structures in the near wake are also studied, and in particular the time-dependent evolution of the secondary eddies in relation to the fully developed primary ones is analysed.

Numerical study and physical analysis of the pressure and velocity fields in the near wake of a circular cylinder

Computation of high Reynolds number flow around a circular cylinder with surface roughness

Early stages of unsteady viscous flows around a circular cylinder at Reynolds numbers of 3 × 103 and 9.5 × 103 are analysed numerically by direct integration of the Navier–Stokes equations – a fourth-order finite-difference scheme is used for the resolution of the stream-function equation and a second-order one for the vorticity-transport equation. Evolution with time of the flow structure is studied in detail. Some new phenomena are revealed and confirmed by experiments.The influence of the grid systems and the downstream boundary conditions on the flow structure and the velocity profiles is reported. The computed results are compared qualitatively and quantitatively with experimental visualization and measurements. The comparison is found to be satisfactory.

Numerical solution of the early stage of the unsteady viscous flow around a circular cylinder: a comparison with experimental visualization and measurements

The starting flows past a two-dimensional NACA 0012 airfoil translating and oscillating at large incidences are investigated by visualization experiments and numerical calculations. The airfoil model is set in motion impulsively and subjected simultaneously to a constant translation and harmonic oscillation in pitch. The evolution of the vortex wake is followed in a sequence of streamline visualizations and the wake pattern generated is analysed. The parameters varied in the visualization experiment are the Reynolds number ranging from 1500 to 10000, the reduced frequency from 0.1 to 1.0, the mean incidence 30° or 15° and the angular amplitude 15° or 7°. There are also two additional parameters of special interest: the airfoil cross-section and the pitching axis. The effects of these parameters are discussed in relation to the resultant wake patterns. Some comparison is made with the results of earlier experiments.

Further experiments on vortex formation around an oscillating and translating airfoil at large incidences

Numerical analysis of unsteady secondary vortices generated by an impulsively started circular cylinder

The starting flows past a two-dimensional oscillating and translating airfoil are investigated by visualization experiments and numerical calculations. The airfoil, elliptic in cross-section, is set in motion impulsively and subjected simultaneously to a steady translation and a harmonic oscillation in pitch. The incidence of the airfoil is variable between 0° and 45° and the Reynolds number based on the chord length is between 1500 and 10000. The main object of the present study is to reveal some marked characteristics of the unsteady vortices produced from the oscillating airfoil set at large incidences in excess of the static stall angle. Another purpose is to examine, in some detail, the respective and combined effects of the major experimental parameters on the vortex wake development. It is shown that, in general, the dominant parameter of the flow is the reduced frequency not only when the airfoil oscillates at incidences close to the static stall angle but also at larger incidences. It is also demonstrated that, as the pitching frequency is increased, the patterns of the vortex wake are dependent on the product of the reduced frequency and the amplitude rather than on the frequency itself. It is noted that the combined effect of a high reduced frequency and a large amplitude can give rise to cyclic superposition of leading-edge vortices from which a gradually expanding standing vortex is developed on the upper surface.
