Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Mechanical behavior of amorphous alloys

There is a special reason for reviewing this book at this time: it is the 50th edition of a compendium that is known and used frequently in most chemical and physical laboratories in many parts of the world. Surely, a publication that has been published for 56 years, withstanding the vagaries of science in this century, must have had something to offer. There is another reason: while the book is a standard fixture in most chemical and physical laboratories, including those in medical centers, it is not as frequently seen in the laboratories of physician's offices (those either in solo or group practice). I believe that the Handbook can be useful in those laboratories. One of the reasons, among others, is that the various basic items of information it offers may be helpful in new tests, either physical or chemical, which are continuously being published. In comparing a material's resistance to distort under mechanical load rather than to alter in volume, Poisson's ratio offers the fundamental metric by which to compare the performance of any material when strained elastically. The numerical limits are set by ½ and -1, between which all stable isotropic materials are found. With new experiments, computational methods and routes to materials synthesis, we assess what Poisson's ratio means in the contemporary understanding of the mechanical characteristics of modern materials. Central to these recent advances, we emphasize the significance of relationships outside the elastic limit between Poisson's ratio and densification, connectivity, ductility and the toughness of solids; and their association with the dynamic properties of the liquids from which they were condensed and into which they melt.

Poisson's ratio and modern materials

Preceramic polymers were proposed over 30 years ago as precursors for the fabrication of mainly Si-based advanced ceramics, generally denoted as polymer-derived ceramics (PDCs). The polymer to ceramic transformation process enabled significant technological breakthroughs in ceramic science and technology, such as the development of ceramic fibers, coatings, or ceramics stable at ultrahigh temperatures (up to 2000°C) with respect to decomposition, crystallization, phase separation, and creep. In recent years, several important advances have been achieved such as the discovery of a variety of functional properties associated with PDCs. Moreover, novel insights into their structure at the nanoscale level have contributed to the fundamental understanding of the various useful and unique features of PDCs related to their high chemical durability or high creep resistance or semiconducting behavior. From the processing point of view, preceramic polymers have been used as reactive binders to produce technical ceramics, they have been manipulated to allow for the formation of ordered pores in the meso-range, they have been tested for joining advanced ceramic components, and have been processed into bulk or macroporous components. Consequently, possible fields of applications of PDCs have been extended significantly by the recent research and development activities. Several key engineering fields suitable for application of PDCs include high-temperature-resistant materials (energy materials, automotive, aerospace, etc.), hard materials, chemical engineering (catalyst support, food- and biotechnology, etc.), or functional materials in electrical engineering as well as in micro/nanoelectronics. The science and technological development of PDCs are highly interdisciplinary, at the forefront of micro- and nanoscience and technology, with expertise provided by chemists, physicists, mineralogists, and materials scientists, and engineers. Moreover, several specialized industries have already commercialized components based on PDCs, and the production and availability of the precursors used has dramatically increased over the past few years. In this feature article, we highlight the following scientific issues related to advanced PDCs research: (1) General synthesis procedures to produce silicon-based preceramic polymers.
(2) Special microstructural features of PDCs.
(3) Unusual materials properties of PDCs, that are related to their unique nanosized microstructure that makes preceramic polymers of great and topical interest to researchers across a wide spectrum of disciplines.
(4) Processing strategies to fabricate ceramic components from preceramic polymers.
(5) Discussion and presentation of several examples of possible real-life applications that take advantage of the special characteristics of preceramic polymers. Note: In the past, a wide range of specialized international symposia have been devoted to PDCs, in particular organized by the American Ceramic Society, the European Materials Society, and the Materials Research Society. Most of the reviews available on PDCs are either not up to date or deal with only a subset of preceramic polymers and ceramics (e.g., silazanes to produce SiCN-based ceramics). Thus, this review is focused on a large number of novel data and developments, and contains materials from the literature but also from sources that are not widely available.

Polymer-Derived Ceramics: 40 Years of Research and Innovation in Advanced Ceramics

Very different materials are named “Glass,” with Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio (ν) extending from 5 to 180 GPa and from 0.1 to 0.4, respectively, in the case of bulk inorganic glasses. Although glasses have in common the lack of long-range order in the atomic organization, they offer a wide range of structural features at the nanoscale and we show in this analysis that beside the essential role of elastic properties for materials selection in mechanical design, the elastic characteristics (E, ν) at the continuum scale allow to get insight into the short- and medium-range orders existing in glasses. In particular, ν, the atomic packing density (Cg) and the glass network dimensionality appear to be strongly correlated. Maximum values for ν and Cg are observed for metallic glasses (ν∼0.4 and Cg>0.7), which are based on cluster-like structural units. Atomic networks consisting primarily of chains and layers units (chalcogenides, low Si-content silicate, and phosphate glasses) correspond to ν>0.25 and Cg>0.56. On the contrary, ν<0.25 is associated with a highly cross-linked network, such as in a-SiO2, with a tri-dimensional organization resulting in a low packing density. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the elastic moduli brings a new light on the structural changes occurring above the glass transition temperature and on the depolymerization rate in the supercooled liquid. The softening rate depends on the level of cooperativity of atomic movements at the source of the deformation process, with an obvious correlation with the “fragility” of the liquid.

Elastic Properties and Short-to Medium-Range Order in Glasses

The development of new glassy materials is key for addressing major global challenges in energy, medicine, and advanced communications systems. For example, thin, flexible, and large-area glass substrates will play an enabling role in the development of flexible displays, roll-to-roll processing of solar cells, next-generation touch-screen devices, and encapsulation of organic semiconductors. The main drawback of glass and its limitation for these applications is its brittle fracture behavior, especially in the presence of surface flaws, which can significantly reduce the practical strength of a glass product. Hence, the design of new ultrastrong glassy materials and strengthening techniques is of crucial importance. The main issues regarding glass strength are discussed, with an emphasis on the underlying microscopic mechanisms that are responsible for mechanical properties. The relationship among elastic properties and fracture behavior is also addressed, focusing on both oxide and metallic glasses. From a theoretical perspective, atomistic modeling of mechanical properties of glassy materials is considered. The topological origin of these properties is also discussed, including its relation to structural and chemical heterogeneities. Finally, comments are given on several toughening strategies for increasing the damage resistance of glass products.

Towards Ultrastrong Glasses

Ge-Se chalcogenide glasses are characterized by relatively low hardness (0.39-2.35 GPa) and low fracture toughness (0.1-0.28 MPa.m 1/2 ). Actually, the hardness of chalcogen-rich glasses is low enough so that the brittleness parameter, B = H/K c , is lower than that of silicate glasses. Whereas hardness and Young's modulus increase with increasing germanium contents, fracture toughness follows a trend similar to that of the density and exhibits a maximum for the Ge 20 Se 80 composition, which corresponds to the rigidity percolation threshold. Optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations suggest that the indentation deformation proceeds by a localized shear deformation phenomenon. Glasses in the chalcogen-rich region behave viscoelastically at room temperature. As a consequence, an increase of the loading time results in a decrease of hardness and toughness.

Hardness, Toughness, and Scratchability of Germanium–Selenium Chalcogenide Glasses

To estimate the ratio of densification to Vickers indentation volume, three-dimensional images of Vickers indentations on several glasses, including silicate glasses and bulk metallic glass (BMG), were obtained before and after annealing using an atomic force microscope. Large volume recovery of Vickers indentation by annealing was observed for all glasses but BMG. Following previous studies, this recovered volume almost corresponded to the densified volume under a Vickers indenter, and the compositional dependence of densification was discussed. The ratios of densification to the total indentation volume for silica and soda-lime glasses were 92% and 61%, respectively. It was concluded that densification was a general property for silicate glasses and that the ratios of densification to the total indentation volume for all the glasses correlated well with Poisson’s ratios of the glasses.
