Since the discovery of mechanically exfoliated graphene in 2004, research on ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials has grown exponentially in the fields of condensed matter physics, material science, chemistry, and nanotechnology. Highlighting their compelling physical, chemical, electronic, and optical properties, as well as their various potential applications, in this Review, we summarize the state-of-art progress on the ultrathin 2D nanomaterials with a particular emphasis on their recent advances. First, we introduce the unique advances on ultrathin 2D nanomaterials, followed by the description of their composition and crystal structures. The assortments of their synthetic methods are then summarized, including insights on their advantages and limitations, alongside some recommendations on suitable characterization techniques. Recent Advances in Ultrathin Two-Dimensional Nanomaterials

Two-dimensional (2D) metal–organic framework (MOF) nanosheets are attracting increasing research attention due to their unique properties originating from their ultrathin thickness, large surface area and high surface-to-volume atom ratios. Many great advances have been made in the synthesis and application of 2D MOF nanosheets over the past few years. In this review, we summarize the recent advances in the synthesis of 2D MOF nanosheets by using top-down methods, e.g. sonication exfoliation, mechanical exfoliation, Li-intercalation exfoliation and chemical exfoliation, and bottom-up methods, i.e. interfacial synthesis, three-layer synthesis, surfactant-assisted synthesis, modulated synthesis, and sonication synthesis. In addition, the recent progress in 2D MOF nanosheet-based nanocomposites is also briefly introduced. The potential applications of 2D MOF nanosheets in gas separation, energy conversion and storage, catalysis, sensors and biomedicine are discussed. Finally, we give our personal insights into the challenges and opportunities for the future research of 2D MOF nanosheets and their composites.

Two-dimensional metal-organic framework nanosheets: synthesis and applications.

This Review focuses on research oriented toward elucidation of the various aspects that determine adsorption of CO2 in metal–organic frameworks and its separation from gas mixtures found in industrial processes. It includes theoretical, experimental, and combined approaches able to characterize the materials, investigate the adsorption/desorption/reaction properties of the adsorbates inside such environments, screen and design new materials, and analyze additional factors such as material regenerability, stability, effects of impurities, and cost among several factors that influence the effectiveness of the separations. CO2 adsorption, separations, and membranes are reviewed followed by an analysis of the effects of stability, impurities, and process operation conditions on practical applications.

CO2 Capture and Separations Using MOFs: Computational and Experimental Studies

Surface-supported metal–organic framework thin films are receiving increasing attention as a novel form of nanotechnology. New deposition techniques that enable the control of the film thickness, homogeneity, morphology, and dimensions with a huge number of metal–organic framework compounds offer tremendous opportunities in a number of different application fields. In response to increasing demands for environmental sustainability and cleaner energy, much effort in recent years has been devoted to the development of MOF thin films for applications in photovoltaics, CO2 reduction, energy storage, water splitting, and electronic devices, as well as for the fabrication of membranes. Although existing applications are promising and encouraging, MOF thin films still face numerous challenges, including the need for a more thorough understanding of the thin-film growth mechanism, stability of the internal and external interfaces, strategies for doping and models for charge carrier transport. In this paper, we review the recent advances in MOF thin films, including fabrication and patterning strategies and existing nanotechnology applications. We conclude by listing the most attractive future opportunities as well as the most urgent challenges.

Surface-supported metal–organic framework thin films: fabrication methods, applications, and challenges

The rational construction of covalent or noncovalent organic two-dimensional nanosheets is a fascinating target because of their promising applications in electronics, membrane technology, catalysis, sensing, and energy technologies. Herein, a large-area (square millimeters) and free-standing 2D supramolecular polymer (2DSP) single-layer sheet (0.7-0.9 nm in thickness), comprising triphenylene-fused nickel bis(dithiolene) complexes has been readily prepared by using the Langmuir-Blodgett method. Such 2DSPs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activities for hydrogen generation from water with a Tafel slope of 80.5 mV decade(-1) and an overpotential of 333 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) , which are superior to that of recently reported carbon nanotube supported molecular catalysts and heteroatom-doped graphene catalysts. This work is promising for the development of novel free-standing organic 2D materials for energy technologies.

Large-Area, Free-Standing, Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Polymer Single-Layer Sheets for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Two-dimensional polymeric nanosheets have recently gained much attention, particularly top-down nanosheets such as graphene and metal chalcogenides originating from bulk-layered mother materials. Although molecule-based bottom-up nanosheets manufactured directly from molecular components can exhibit greater structural diversity than top-down nanosheets, the bottom-up nanosheets reported thus far lack useful functionalities. Here we show the design and synthesis of a bottom-up nanosheet featuring a photoactive bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complex motif. A liquid/liquid interfacial synthesis between a three-way dipyrrin ligand and zinc(II) ions results in a multi-layer nanosheet, whereas an air/liquid interfacial reaction produces a single-layer or few-layer nanosheet with domain sizes of >10 μm on one side. The bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) metal complex nanosheet is easy to deposit on various substrates using the Langmuir-Schafer process. The nanosheet deposited on a transparent SnO2 electrode functions as a photoanode in a photoelectric conversion system, and is thus the first photofunctional bottom-up nanosheet.

A photofunctional bottom-up bis(dipyrrinato)zinc(II) complex nanosheet

Dipyrrins serve as monovalent bidentate ligand molecules that coordinate to various cations. Their BF2 complexes, 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene and its derivatives (BODIPYs), exhibit excellent photostability, strong light absorption, and high fluorescence quantum yield, thereby encouraging their application in various fields, e.g., as biological and biomedical fluorescent markers. Dipyrrin may also accept a wide variety of metal ions spontaneously. However, dipyrrin metal complexes have been disregarded from materials science research. This review article summarizes recent progress in bis(dipyrrinato)metal(II) and tris(dipyrrinato)metal(III) complexes from the viewpoint of materials chemistry. Section 2 describes a series of efforts aimed to realize intense luminescence superior to or comparable with that of BODIPYs. The spontaneous coordination of these complexes enables them to construct self-assembled nanoarchitectures, such as supramolecules and coordination polymers that form one-dimensional nanowires, two-dimensional nanosheets, and metal–organic frameworks. Section 3 describes such alluring molecular superstructures. Section 4 discusses potential applications based on these nanoarchitectures, such as thermoelectric and photoelectric conversion.

New aspects in bis and tris(dipyrrinato)metal complexes: bright luminescence, self-assembled nanoarchitectures, and materials applications

One-dimensional coordination polymers (1D-CPs) tend either to dissociate into constitutive ligands and metals readily in solution, or to aggregate randomly and amorphously, which prevents them from widespread application. In the present research, 1D-CPs comprising bridging dipyrrin ligands and divalent metal ions (Zn2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+) are synthesized. A liquid/liquid interfacial reaction gives rise to single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction analysis: A dichloromethane solution of the ligand is layered with aqueous metal(ii) acetate, such that the coordination reaction proceeds at the liquid/liquid interface. Isolated single fibers of the zinc coordination polymer may be exfoliated from the single crystal or bulk solid upon ultrasonication. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) detects the isolated fibers with lengths of more than several μm. The exfoliated 1D-CP wires feature good processability, realizing a conjugate with single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), and a thin film on a transparent SnO2 electrode. The processed materials show electric conversion ability: For example, the modified SnO2 electrode serves as a photoanode for a photoelectric conversion system. The designability and tunability of the present 1D-CPs is demonstrated by a ligand modification, affording a luminescent property and an extension of the photoelectric conversion response to longer wavelengths.
