In this chapter, we will restrict our attention to the ferrites and a few other closely related materials. The great interest in ferrites stems from their unique combination of a spontaneous magnetization and a high electrical resistivity. The observed magnetization results from the difference in the magnetizations of two non-equivalent sub-lattices of the magnetic ions in the crystal structure. Materials of this type should strictly be designated as “ferrimagnetic” and in some respects are more closely related to anti-ferromagnetic substances than they are to ferromagnetics in which the magnetization results from the parallel alignment of all the magnetic moments present. We shall not adhere to this special nomenclature except to emphasize effects, which are due to the existence of the sub-lattices.

Ferromagnetic materials

Selenium (Se) is one of the natural elements, and it is widely studied because of its complex behavior, especially in its involvement in the metabolism of organisms. In addition, Se contamination at high concentrations has been reported to affect human health. In this study, an adsorbent material based on manganese-magnetic (Mn-Fe3O4) has been developed, which was prepared by impregnation methods. The developed material was characterized by spectroscopy, microscopy, magnetometry, and N2 gas adsorption to investigate its surface and paramagnetic properties. A batch adsorption test was used to investigate the removing Se ions in an aqueous medium. The experimental result showed that the Se equilibrium adsorption onto Mn-Fe3O4 material could be reached within 120 min at pH 7.0 with a maximum adsorption capacity (qe) of 12.50 mg g-1 and %removal of Se at 99% at room temperature conditions. In addition, the material is easy to regenerate under alkaline conditions. This study provides strategies for fabricating magnetic materials to separate rare earth metals efficiently and rapidly.

The cross-linked terpolymers include a repeating unit with multiple ligand centers that different metal ions can bind to. The cross-linked tetrapolymers are cationic, zwitterionic and anionic, and can be in either an acidic form or a basic form. A method of removing metal ions from an aqueous solution with these cross-linked tetrapolymers is also described.

Quaternary ammonium solvated tetrapolymers and methods of removing cr(iii) from solution using the tetrapolymer

A metal adsorbent that includes silver-decorated graphene nano-platelets and a polymer matrix that comprises polyamide, wherein the metal adsorbent is a highly porous material with a specific surface area of 200 to 300 m2/g and an average pore size of 50 to 100 Å, which effective removes heavy metals and cations from a liquid. Various embodiments of the metal adsorbent and a method of making thereof are also provided.
