This paper presents a low power boost converter for thermoelectric energy harvesting that demonstrates an efficiency that is 15% higher than the state-of-the-art for voltage conversion ratios above 20. This is achieved by utilizing a technique allowing synchronous rectification in the discontinuous conduction mode. A low-power method for input voltage monitoring is presented. The low input voltage requirements allow operation from a thermoelectric generator powered by body heat. The converter, fabricated in a 0.13 μm CMOS process, operates from input voltages ranging from 20 mV to 250 mV while supplying a regulated 1 V output. The converter consumes 1.6 (1.1) μW of quiescent power, delivers up to 25 (175) μW of output power, and is 46 (75)% efficient for a 20 mV and 100 mV input, respectively.

In the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication system, various service requirements of different communication environments are expected to be satisfied. As a new evolution network structure, heterogeneous network (HetNet) has been studied in recent years. Compared with homogeneous networks, HetNets can increase the opportunity in the spatial resource reuse and improve users’ quality of service by developing small cells into the coverage of macrocells. Since there is mutual interference among different users and the limited spectrum resource in HetNets, however, efficient resource allocation (RA) algorithms are vitally important to reduce the mutual interference and achieve spectrum sharing. In this article, we provide a comprehensive survey on RA in HetNets for 5G communications. Specifically, we first introduce the definition and different network scenarios of HetNets. Second, RA models are discussed. Then, we present a classification to analyze current RA algorithms for the existing works. Finally, some challenging issues and future research trends are discussed. Accordingly, we provide two potential structures for 6G communications to solve the RA problems of the next-generation HetNets, such as a learning-based RA structure and a control-based RA structure. The goal of this article is to provide important information on HetNets, which could be used to guide the development of more efficient techniques in this research area.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used for a wide range of applications, including wireless communication systems, which have the potential to provide cost-effective wireless connectivity for a wide variety of applications. The present UAV models lack the flexibility needed to carry the mission's varied payloads. As a result, appropriate design and analysis of the UAV structure are essential. This work presents a complete design and analysis of a quadcopter UAV for wireless communications purposes, which is carried out using computer-aided design (CAD) tools and techniques. Several design requirements carried out the quadcopter design, and finite element analysis (FEA) methods were used in the approach. Static structural and modal evaluations of the quadcopter structure are carried out using the appropriate material selection in order to determine the design feasibility and durability.

Design and Analysis of A Reliable Quadcopter UAV for Wireless Communication Purposes

Free space optical (FSO) communication channels are affected by fluctuations in irradiance due to atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors. Recently, a generalized statistical model knows as Malaga ( M ) was developed to describe irradiance fluctuations of the beam propagating through a turbulent medium. In this paper, an approximate finite-series probability density function (PDF) for composite M turbulence with pointing errors is verified. Considering multiple pulse-position-modulation (MPPM) with intensity modulation and direct detection, specific closed-form expressions for average symbol error rate (ASER) and outage probability are obtained. Moreover, asymptotic expressions for ASER and outage probability over the Malaga channel with pointing errors are presented. Finally, ASER and outage probability expressions are deduced in three turbulence regimes, strong, moderate, and weak. Therefore, simulation results are given to confirm the accuracy of the proposed expressions. The results show that the optimum beam divergence angle is 1 mrad for zero-boresight displacement and 2 mrad for nonzero-boresight at a distance of 1 km. By increasing the range to 5 km, atmospheric turbulence is found to have the dominant effect over boresight displacement. Moreover, the system performance at the optimized divergence angle is studied in terms of transmit power, normalized boresight, and link distance.

Generic evaluation of FSO system over Málaga turbulence channel with MPPM and non-zero-boresight pointing errors


 The light fidelity (LiFi) has been successfully used to achieve high data transfer rates, high security, great availability, and low interference. In this paper, we propose a LiFi system consisting of a combination of non-orthogonal multi-access (NOMA), asymmetrically-clipped optical (ACO) and filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) techniques combined with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM). The paper also applies a $\mu$-law companding approach for a high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) reduction of the FBMC/OQAM scheme. The combination of NOMA, ACO-FBMC/OQAM, and $\mu$-law companding allows a significant increase in throughput and a significant reduction in non-served users. An appropriate algorithm is developed considering two scenarios, maximize the throughput and minimize the number of blocked (non-served) users. The results show that the throughput of the system can be increased by $1.8$ compared to FBMC and OFDM. Furthermore, the proposed system reduces the number of blocked users below $10\%$, while the system can provide $30\%$ or $60\%$ in case only the FBMC or OFDM is used, respectively.

Hybrid NOMA-Based ACO-FBMC/OQAM for Next-Generation Indoor Optical Wireless Communications Using LiFi Technology

The Electroencephalography (EEG) signals that indicate the electrical activity of the brain are acquired with a high sampling rate. Consequently, the size of the recorded EEG data is large. For storing and transmitting these data, large space and bandwidth are demanded. Therefore, preprocessing and compressing EEG data are important for efficient data transmission and storage. The purpose of this approach is to design an efficient EEG data compression system in terms of time and space complexities. The proposed system consists of three main units: preprocessing unit, compression unit, and reconstruction unit. The core of the compression process occurs in the compression unit. Different combinations of hybrid lossy/lossless compression techniques were tried in the compression process. In this study, both the Discrete Cosine Transform and the Discrete Wavelet Transform techniques were experimented for the lossy compression algorithm. The Arithmetic Coding and the Run Length Encoding were experimented then for the lossless compression algorithm. The final results showed that combining both the Discrete Cosine Transform and the Run Length Encoding yields the most optimal system complexity and compression ratio. This approach achieved up to CR = 94% at RMSE = 0.188.
