Features of a fully renewable US electricity system: Optimized mixes of wind and solar PV and transmission grid extensions

TL;DR: In this paper, wind and solar PV generation data are calculated, based on 32 years of weather data with temporal resolution of 1 h and spatial resolution of 40 × 40 km 2, assuming site-suitability-based and stochastic wind-and solar capacity distributions.
Journal ArticleDOI

Principal Mismatch Patterns Across a Simplified Highly Renewable European Electricity Network

TL;DR: In this article, a principal component analysis is applied to a simplified networked European electricity system with a high share of wind and solar power generation, revealing a small number of important mismatch patterns, which explain most of the system's required backup and transmission infrastructure.
Book ChapterDOI

Infrastructure Estimates for a Highly Renewable Global Electricity Grid

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided quantitative estimates for the benefits and costs of an intercontinental HVDC grid connecting a number of highly populated super regions in the Northern Hemisphere, and compared the economical benefits to the additional cost of intercontinental transmission lines.
